Today is my first day working with this app. I’m entering custom exercises to build my first routine. The app has frozen several times and needed to be restarted.

The workout app field is expanding rapidly and Strong is getting left behind.

I’m quickly finding that there’s no perfect workout app. There’s always a these things are great or improvements over this app…but…and the “but” is the key because it comes down to which app is offering the trade offs you’re willing to live without? My frustration with Strong is we are still dealing with syncing issues between the Apple Watch and the iPhone. The whole purpose of starting and ending workouts on the Watch was supposed to be to minimize these issues yet I still find I’m having increasingly more issues with ghost workouts - workouts started and ended on Apple Watch but instead of syncing they go into workout purgatory only to show up after you log out and log back in. If this wasn’t as frequent as it occurs it may be something you could deal with occasionally but it’s not. Secondly, when you create exercises, you’re unable to assign body parts to them after saving them initially. Even if you go to the exercise library and edit them there. Additionally there’s no way to add photos. I beta test a lot of workout apps and this is one place where people are smoking Strong. Here’s why this matters: Strong doesn’t have a lot of common gym exercises in the library. So when you create them that means they also won’t have images or instructions on how to do them. Meanwhile Strong is starting to feel very Windows XP in a Windows 11 world. This is also seen in the charts and graphs which seem flat and dated versus many newer apps offer richer charts and data presentation. Likewise, there’s no options for having Strong enforce progressive overload which is something you’re seeing in more and more apps where they automatically boost or recommend boosting your weight on your next workout. This is great for people starting out on their fitness journeys that aren’t as familiar with these kinds of things. Not everyone is dedicated enough to watch hours of YouTube videos to figure them out. Update: I think the part of the bigger picture that Strong misses is that you’re providing a part of the picture of someone’s fitness journey. Thinks that should be easy to get to like exporting workout data are buried under paths that don’t make sense like you clearly have a dedicated history button and you literally show my workout so why when I say share workout is it only showing the template info instead of the actual workout data - to get to the workout data it’s buried way over under settings with an option to do a CSV. The issue is this is you entire workout history - I do weekly check ins as do most people who are tracking their fitness metrics so this is a royal pain in the butt and a lot of extra steps to cut what you need and big picture: when EVERYONE does this there’s no efficient way to get your data points that you need because it becomes very time consuming.

Buggy, even with the paid version

6.4.2 · 2026/06/27 00:37 · Vvampyr

2

This app is incredibly inconsistent, especially when it comes to syncing up to my Series 11, sometimes it absolutely refuses to communicate with the watch and vice versa. The timers between sets often freeze or don’t engage at all, it throws in random numbers for weight and reps into my workout templates and a large amount of my recorded sessions seem to disappear from my history altogether. The app is great when it works, but even after several updates it just can’t seem to do what it’s supposed to consistently.

Junk app

6.4.2 · 2026/06/26 15:27 · STEMgrl

1

If you ever have to reach out to the developer team, know you’re in for zero help. This app has constant issues integrating with Apple Watch which, for a fitness app, renders it useless. Every time I reach out to support they just tell me to uninstall and reinstall the app. If that was going to work, don’t they think it would’ve worked the first time? They’re lazy and uninterested in making this app actually work for its customers. I highly regret paying for the lifetime plan years ago and wish I hadn’t wasted that money.

Live sync still buggy

6.4.2 · 2026/06/25 14:53 · Moogleii

2

A bit better than when Apple Watch support first came out but it’s still very iffy. Lost lots of set information after completing a work out. Watch had all sets completed, App did not, I completed the workout on the Watch and I guess it chose the App’s version for history.

Used to be good

6.4.1 · 2026/06/21 12:53 · Cb1087

2

Little changes have been made that make no sense. Why can I take notes on a set of any given move, but when I view the history of that move I can’t see the notes? When I do a move on Wednesday, I can’t see the angle I used or changes I made from the last Friday. That USED to be possible, and I even emailed about it last year, but it’s still gone. That’s useless.

Illogical Workout Finish

6.4.1 · 2026/06/19 15:59 · chim617

2

There is no way to make skipped sets carry over to future workouts without losing other changes. You will see skipped exercises disappear or else newly added exercises disappear, depending on which of the 3 illogical “finish workout” options the app offers. Very frustrating. Difficult to maintain a consistent routine. People have been complaining about this for years on Reddit but it’s still not fixed.

No Longer Updating

6.4.1 · 2026/06/18 09:27 · Bbcggdfjy

2

The app is good except for the fact that is seems like they've stopped caring or updating the app. The list of workouts in their database is extremely limited. You can add your own, but they don't allow you add any images/ videos/notes for reference. I think with ALL the apps out there, they should be updating their list of workouts weekly to include visuals and notes. Or at least let users upload their own videos/photos/notes when adding a new workout. I also think whenever you use a template for a workout, if you change it during your active workout and then finish - there should be a 3rd option to "Save As New" that doesn't alter your original template but allows you to save what you created as a whole new template. They only currently allow you to either keep your original template or override your original template.

Update is trash

Been using it for years. It was absolutely phenomenal until the last update. All of my years of data are gone. My workouts are gone. And now everything requires money. I can’t even save a weeks worth of workouts without paying anymore. Time to find a new app.

Useless Watch Integration

Watch App Integration bugs on EVERY Workout. Timers not updating and ending significantly earlier/later, Delays and Failures in workout syncing, and app crashes on watch and phone make using the app absolutely irritating when tracking workouts. Fix your watch integration.

I’ve been a strong user since ~2018. I like it, I really do. However there are *so* many bugs I run into *every single workout*. And it is infuriating to see that instead of fixing these bugs or improving the existing flow, y’all instead push an update to add …widgets!? The Apple Watch <-> iPhone sync engine is *terrible*. There’s literally no way y’all don’t know about this cause I have issues with it every single workout. I’ll mark a set as done on my phone then my watch won’t see it so I do it there, then I go back to my phone and I’ve lost like 5 sets and have to re-enter them. My patience is wearing so thin. I’ve even sent multiple emails to the developers, including one that was being nothing but positive and understanding. However it’s been 3+ months since then and I have seen no (noticeable) improvements and I’m honestly not convinced the developers even care about this stuff? I really want to keep using Strong but y’all are making it harder and harder for me to stay and not move to a competitor. And honestly the only reason I haven’t is cause there is overhead in switching. Surely y’all care about craft and details more than this.

Love the app, sync getting worse

6.3.3 · 2026/05/27 12:22 · Lucasnad27

2

I’ve been using this app for years and have loved it. Recently, the quality seems to be slipping, or sync’ing between the phone and watch has gotten more difficult over the years. I was on the TestFlight, and figured that was the issue, but it’s just as bad on the App Store version. Going to hang in there for a little while longer before switching. I hope they are able to fix sync so I don’t have to think about moving all my workouts to another platform.

If you use the “live sync” feature to track a workout using both the phone app and Apple Watch, the app will regularly lose sets you have already saved. Super frustrating that the app cannot perform its basic functionality.

Not that intuitive

Unknown · 2026/01/03 10:49 · Marcos Machado

2

The app needs tons of improvements. For example, I cannot connect to the app in the watch because it doesn’t show a button to login with apple account. Typing email and password on the Apple Watch screen is impossible. Another example, it doesn’t have a good organisation of exercises and has a lack of them. Sometimes the app doesn’t ring you the time is up when you have timer configured for intervals.

Used to love it — recent update broke the core experience

Unknown · 2025/12/10 10:15 · little.known

1

I’ve used Strong for years and it was rock solid, but the latest version introduced major usability issues that still haven’t been fixed months later. The biggest problem: watch and phone no longer sync properly. You can now start totally independent sessions on each device — a huge step backwards. The seamless integration that made the app so great is gone, replaced by clunky, repetitive button presses and confusing behaviour. Heart rate used to show constantly, which was a brilliant way to track intensity and recovery. Now it only appears sporadically, if at all. Flow is also really broken which interrupts your routine. Frustrating to no end. It used to be so streamlined and smooth but now I’m spending ages playing around with it each workout trying to get it to work instead of working out. Also: - All my settings (like rest times) reset after the update and multiple times since interrupting flow having to play with the app - Set completion doesn’t update reliably between watch and phone - Ending a workout is more limited, with fewer post-session options - Timers are a mess - Adjusting weight which is a core function is now difficult and error prone. Especially annoying and phone sync doesn’t work properly forcing you to use your watch - Sometimes gym programs revert to old copies I waited a couple of months to see if these issues would be resolved, but no luck so far. Every update the user experience gets worse and the app more unreliable.

The App was good an easy to use. With the update it forced me to update my iPhone and also my Apple Watch just to be unable to login on my watch, its just the worst experience you can give to a customer. It worked so well in the past without the need for the app on the watch and nonsese forced login.. If the re-billing wouldnt have been 2 weeks prior the update i would have canceled it immediately. I liked the app and have 140 workouts but without the watch working its a no go for me, dont want to have my phone in hands all the time during workouts.

Just downloaded and used this app, took lot of time to make one template then when it was done, half of the exercises where gone. Had to fix them and looked ok. Did my training, used my Apple Watch and saw that it won't update on my phone while training. Kept just using my Watch. Some Sets I put on the template wasn't there... Then when I finish my workout I had like 3 training days in my history, when it should be one. Deleted two, kept one, added my other sets that wasmissing and save. Then I opened the app to review my training and all my data was gone. Wasted tons of time on this app and ended up with no data at all...

Duplicate entries, unsaved changes

Unknown · 2023/11/07 09:29 · i.am.al

2

1st things 1st, the most annoying bug in this app is the duplicate entries. I followed the official suggestions in the FAQ but every single time I still get duplicate entries. 2nd thing related to the first issue is that deleted entries sometimes reappear. My guess is the app didn’t sync with the watch therefore it reappears when synced during the next workout. Strange thing is there’s haptic feedback every time i delete an entry. Finally, my dashboard doesn’t save the changes i make. I added two new graphs and tried rearranging them but it reverts back the very next day. I’m currently on trial period but I doubt I’ll subscribe unless these issues are fixed.

BE WARNED: this app used to cost around $10 lifetime, but then the devs added a couple features and slapped the ridiculous price tag of $139 on it. AND made it a subscription app for $40/y! WHY does a LOG APP need a subscription!? Shameful display of greed! Forget this, here are some apps with the same basic functionalities for a fraction of the price and NO SUBSCRIPTION: HeavySet, Strongly and GymBook.

I just purchased this app and I’ve used it for the first time in my workout this morning. The first major flaw that I see is that it will not calculate the calories you burn during the workout session logged. It also does not keep track of the total time you have worked out. It does offer you the opportunity to set rest periods in between sets but does not keep track of your total workout session time. It also does not appear to allow you to enter a custom exercise or movement. I have been using Fitness Buddy for 9 months and dont like it well enough to buy the subscription but what it does do is track your session time and calculate calories burned. The calories burned number then populates the apple health app as well as “My Fitness Pal” where I log my calorie intake and research foods. What I do like so far is the the data entry interface. I find it very intuitive well thought out, easy to log sets, weight and reps. It is color coordinated making things easier to see or identify. I also like that this app syncs with my apple watch really nicely. I also like that this app doesn't force you into a bunch of stuff you dont need or want. So far I wont start the subscription unless they add these features that are important to me. While I dont like Fitness Buddy it does do the minimum most that I need for it to do. Update: I found the workout timer. Cant find how to pause it if needed. Still unable to find a calorie consumption calculator.

Forced hand

1

Great app, subscription for pro features seems excessive in pricing and poor marketing attitude of makers to try and force people into getting a subscription to get something as medial as being able to save more than 3 workout routines. Pro features of the app should speak for themselves and add some worthwhile features not supply a basic functionality to the app which is lacking with the ability to save only three workout routines which, lets face it, the majority of workout programmes include a greater number of routines. I would consider using a different applications for the reasons: pro version is a subscription and not a one time payment (why this application needs so much extra money in its development compared to its competitors baffles me), basic functionality of basic version is poor due to the marketing tactics of its makers and for what I can see the Pro version seems to add very little in added tools in comparison to competitors for an excessively pricey subscription. Given the number of students that have iPhones use gym regularly and have workout programmes with greater than 3 routines, I think the makers should reconsider the markets they are excluding themselves from. Greed of developers ruins the concept of this app which could go on to be really popular if as I’ve read in other reviews, a great deal of people do not go on to uninstall and find another less sleek more reasonably priced app. No matter how sleek this app becomes, it’s a note taking app, I’d sooner use nots on my phone than pay a subscription fee for such a basic purpose application.

Where’d my review go?

Unknown · 2018/07/05 13:04 · Isaacn86

1

Weird that I wrote a review earlier but it disappeared. Why is my workout come up like a temporary window? As if I’m changing settings or something. I have some exercises that I accidentally made with weights but they are just body weight exercises. I cannot change that fact unless I create a NEW exercise. This is stupid. I dont want to create a new exercise because of my history of that exercise. Also another thing I noticed, on those exercises with weights, but when I don’t put in weights but I put in the reps and click next, it doesn’t turn green and start my timer without me going back and put 0 as my weight. I prefer the old layout. It was much cleaner. Now I’m using a child’s toy. Might as well take out my crayons and colouring book and colour by number while in the gym. Imagine you just repped a huge 350lbs Squats. Then you take out this child’s toy to input your workout. Really....? I told my friend to get this app, then they said they couldn’t use it because it only has 10 workouts a month. I do that many before breakfast. Then to subscribe is $7 a month. Seriously?! When I bought it, it was a one time purchase. Everyone is using monthly payments, try standing out by doing something different. I’ll give you this advice for free.

How is this a subscription service?

Unknown · 2017/10/04 17:05 · Emilia777

1

This is a great app, but I can’t even begin to understand why the developer thinks it appropriate to require users to pay a monthly subscription for it. All I want is the capability to log my workouts. I would pay for that, as a one-time payment, but forcing users to get a subscription is an insulting money-grab in my view. A pity.

Look, I'm all for monetising your app and picking a sustainable pricing model, But $280 for a full unlock (it used to be $10, remember) is beyond excessive. Sure, you could also pay $40/yr but I can buy a lot of pens and paper for that much, and spreadsheet software is a lot cheaper than this.

I’ve been using the Strong app for about two months now. I really like the app, I was able to put together comprehensive daily workout plans. One of the things I did that could potentially be an add-on to the app. For each exercise, I had a note that identifies the body part and specific sub category of the muscle worked for each exercise. example: Triceps Extension Target: Triceps (Lateral, Medial, Long Head Bent-Over Reverse Flye Target: Shoulders Rrear Deltoids) Hammer Curl (Dumbbell) Target: Biceps (Brachialis) Would be nice if this information was in the description. Perhaps at the top showing what the exercise targets and the exact part of the anatomy/muscle. Would also be helpful if when looking up the section that has sub categories, instead of just arms, it broke down, triceps, biceps and which part of the bicep or tricep the exercise effects. I noticed this when the person introduced me to your app had multiple exercises for arms that the short head, but nothing for the long head or brachialis. Because he had no idea. The app could easily navigate someone to selecting exercise exercises for a full workout. Just my thoughts. Still love the ad and will keep using it and recommend recommended to others.

Reliable and Effective, But Starting to Feel Stale

I’ve been using Strong for a few years, and it’s served me well. It’s helped me track my workouts, stay consistent, and keep myself honest so I could continue making progress. That said, the app hasn’t evolved much over the years. The UI feels a bit stale, and there haven’t been many meaningful new features added. As a result, I’ve decided to move on to a different app that feels fresher and offers a social component that Strong currently lacks. Strong is still a solid workout tracker, and I’m grateful for the role it played in my fitness journey, but it’s no longer the best fit for me.

Amazing

Been using the app for a long time. It’s so good that i am considering subscribing just because I feel bad for abusing the app for free.

Owned/used since 2017; just needs active Lock Screen timer + widget

Title says it all! Love the app. Just need to be able to have a widget that shows me how much time is left on my set if I close out of the app (or a timer on the camera island at the top of the screen), and an active monitor on the lock screen that counts down, rather than just a notification that my timer is done

Best Workout App Hands Down

I went through every workout app when I first started using smartphone workout apps. Loved the simplicity from the beginning and the ability to record everything I was focused on and they’ve only built on people’s feedback to make it better. Love looking back at the calendar and seeing all of the workouts I knocked out. Keep going.

Best strength training tracking app out there

It’s simple and intuitive and the Apple Watch interface is perfect for tracking my workouts in real time. Health integration is great, and you can export your data if you want. So glad I found this app.

Great Workout Companion

I use this every time I lift since it makes it easy to track sets, weights, and reps. The UI with the Apple Watch and rest timer is a big seller, especially when compared to similar apps. 2 things on my wishlist for this app: 1. Interface/connection with Strava for wholistic tracking of activities 2. Muscle group use after workout with days for recovery for those groups

I love this app. I started using the free version at the beginning of the year to track my workouts and I’ve been seeing so much progress. The app has almost everything I need, with the exception being that I would love a step metric that I can use for the stairmaster. It currently only allows miles or kms for cardio and the stairmaster at my gym only shows steps or floors climbed. I wouldn’t ding any points for this or anything. This is absolutely a 5 star app. Just a feature that I would be happy to see added!

I am loving it

It’s a beautiful thing, this workout app. Simple interface but yet it’s so rich in experience. Wide library of exercises, provision of custom exercises, body measurement recording option, etc.

Best weight-workout app I’ve used

7/25 update - the latest update has really slowed the app down. The integration with Apple Watch is annoying and it now takes time for the app to “sync”. If you don’t notice the Watch app connection at the beginning of a workout, the workout timer won’t start. Still no ability to check all reps in a set with one click. It gets really old clicking 11 or 13 reps per set for every exercise when I’m doing 15 exercises with 11+ sets per workout. Original review: I used Fitness Point for a few years before I came across the “Strong” app. The wide ranging versatility of Strong is vastly superior to Fitness Point. The paid version of Strong has multiple worthwhile upgrades over the free base app. For me, the ability to create more than 3 personal workouts was a key factor in going with the paid app. My one “wish” for this app that I think would be an improvement would be to see the total weight moved in a single workout prior to hitting “finish”. It would help me hit more goals. I know I can go back and edit but it’s sort of a pain in the middle of a workout. Otherwise, this is a powerful workout app with wide versatility that should appeal to the majority of plate heads and other gym rats like me.

Exercise Search Improved

The search logic really sucked before the update - you had to type the exercise exactly, keyword didn't work at all. I am so happy with the update, works much better now. I'll be keeping this as my main workout tracker. Thanks team!

GREAT!

Amazing app! One thing though: Many machines at different locations may vary in difficulty per labeled weight (different pulley configurations, grip, etc.) Users should be able to create custom, on device instances of the slight different machines, and label them accordingly.

Great!… but…

I love this the simplicity and ease of using this app to track exercise progress. However, I desperately need the developer to make the template update screens understandable! What the heck do they mean???

Amazing free app to keep track

I have been using it for a while. This app is very user friendly and easy to use. There are no annoying ads or processes. I love it. It has your history and it allows u to preform the workout again, meaning that if you have a set workout routine you do not have to re-enter every exercise each time. It also has built in timer so thats very convenient.

Gute App, leider keine neuen Features

Apple Watch not connecting

I tried several times to connect with my user on AW, but it seem impossible with user and password. I tried using the phone and typing the password directly on watch. None worked. Sad. I’m going to look for alternatives around.

Garmin watch support would be a huge addition to Strong

Hi Strong Team, I have been using Strong for several months to track my workouts and I really enjoy the app. The interface is clean, logging workouts is quick, and it has become an important part of my training routine. One feature I really feel is missing, however, is support for Garmin watches. There is a very large community of athletes and gym users who train with Garmin devices, possibly even more than those using Apple Watch. At the moment I am not aware of any major strength training app that integrates well with Garmin. Adding Garmin support could be a huge opportunity for Strong. It would open the app to a large group of users who currently do not have a good solution for syncing their workouts with their watches. In my opinion Strong could really lead the market in this area if Garmin integration were added. Thank you for building such a great app and I hope you will consider Garmin support in the future.

When the timer runs on the background, it somehow keeps breaking the focus on typing Chinese on other apps such as message. Can you solve it? It’s been pretty annoying.

Best workout app there is

I have tried every workout app there is over the last four years some feel clunky somehow have a poor design. Some plainly refuse to have a dark mode for so long or some just didn’t contain the features that I needed like RiR. Strong has to be one of the most kindly designed application applications that I’ve ever used everything as well thought out from the timers through to the elasticity of buttons. I never feel like I’m fighting the application I can finish an exercise record it and then rest. It’s as simple as that in other apps I’d have to go through pop-up Windows lots of button presses with strong everything is just simple and straightforward. it’s also never crashed on me once it just gives the impression of being incredibly well-made and incredibly well maintained and the regularity of the update is super impressive. Right now, there’s only three apps that I pay for and Strong is one of them such as it’s importance to my life.

I’ve been using this app for a couple years now.

Bring back the old countdown timer!

I’ve been using this app for many many years. And I have, for the most part, been enjoying it. But I do now know why they decided to change the countdown timer (rest) to a tiny little bar when it used to be on a large screen, which makes it easy to see while working out. Bring back the old countdown timer please!!!!
