There are problems editing the information; it's not possible to do so yet. It's not yet possible to edit profile pictures for each piece of information. It's also not yet possible to edit the date of birth and year of death.

I appreciate connecting with long lost family but the constant cash grab to subscribe to records to reveal more of the ancestry is over the top. Don’t appreciate that at all. I found My Heritage is far more worth the money since they do all the searching for me it seems and they don’t ask me for money or withhold records while I search for things. I’ll never give ancestry another dime .

So I pay over $100 for the test and all I get are a few matches and ‘hints’ that I have to pay more for. And if I want to see someone in my family’s family tree, pay more! If I want to see a single document, pay more! It’s a rip off and now you have my DNA.

When I first joined Ancestry as a non-subscription user, the platform offered a wide range of features that made genealogy research accessible and enjoyable. However, over time, the experience has significantly declined. Many features that were once available to free users have been removed or restricted, making the platform almost unusable without a subscription. What’s even more frustrating is the cost of subscription plans, especially for Australian users. The pricing is prohibitively expensive, making it difficult for many of us to justify the expense. While I understand the need for a business to monetize its services, the current rates feel disproportionate to the value provided, particularly for those of us outside the U.S. I truly hope Ancestry revisits its pricing structure and considers offering more accessible options for international users. Until then, I’ll be exploring alternative platforms that provide better value for money.

When you first start using Ancestry, it’s very useful and fairly easy to start building your family tree. But once you have a decent sized tree, there are a few features that can become irritating and actually take up a lot of time unnecessarily. As examples, Hints are generated when another user has different details on a person in your tree. In some cases, that can help fill gaps for you but in a lot of cases, the other user may have less detail but you still have to waste time reviewing and then ignoring their ‘Hint’. This becomes very annoying after a while and could be very easily resolved if Ancestry acted on user feedback… Similarly, regular notifications about possible information of people in your tree can’t be switched off. Again, very annoying! Overall, Ancestry is more useful than it isn’t but the sad thing is it could be a whole lot better. And now I’ve downgraded by review from a ‘polite’ 3 to a more honest 2 because the developers response is the same that every poor reviewer receives…no effort by a human to even read the feedback? My review didn’t need to look at troubleshooting when my point was that if I have someone’s birth date as 25 February 1895, giving me a Hint when a different member has added that person’s birth date as February 1895 or Abt 1895 is 100% wasting my time…multiplied by scores of people in my tree. And this is supposed to be helpful how exactly? Question for the ‘developer’…are you a robot?

I have moved my family tree to unsearchable (and private) because of 2 people, Anne Young and Karel Bezuidenhout. Anne Young messaged me out of the blue and she is NOT connected to anyone on my family tree. She has a photograph of my grandfather, Francis George Baker in WW2. Just one photograph. She wanted information from me as she is researching the people in the photograph for her blog. She copied information incorrectly from FamilySearch that I had put in about personal details of my grandparents, not even asking permission before putting it on Wiki. Only when I corrected her did she remove some incorrect details. I added the family of Francis George Baker to Wiki and within a day she complained that I hadn’t added enough sources to my great grandfather! She continued to pressure me to work up to her speed so that she could take my information for her own use. So I have blocked her. Karel Bezuidenhout wrote me as deceased on FamilySearch so that my overseas family thought I had died suddenly. He is another so called genealogist/family historian. He’s not connected to my family and copies things incorrectly so I have blocked him as well. Ancestry is fine if you have American connections which I don’t have! So therefore it has limited relevance for us. Which is why I now have the membership I have.

No option offered to upload raw DNA data from other companies. Super hard to delete account created. It asks for a code sent by email to create a password in order to delete it but after entering the code it loads and nothing happens. How is it possible to create an account using other sites, in my case Google, without a password, but when I want to delete it’s a hassle?? Sounds like a scam to trick people into keeping their info with them. Avoid it.

This information was apparently available and I believe that, but I also believe it is predatory to not make this explicitly clear. I am out $64 for an app I didn't like, and that's not because I'll have to figure out how to buy groceries this month because of that, it is the experience I've had with the product. I also realize that IS my fault, I agreed to something in which I apparently missed the clause about refunds. But for a premium app in 2022, this really didn't impress me. Maybe I didn't give it enough time, but it felt limiting in what I could do. Perhaps it just wasn't intuitive, but I should have been able to find my great grandfather's "profile" and add him as a family member. I also couldn't figure out how to remove myself as the child of my step great grandfather which was frustrating and a tad upsetting - I'm not that man's daughter. I really hadn't looked at ancestry too much until now, heard about it for years though, and so with the policy I greatly disagree with as well as a dissatisfactory experience with the product, I don't recommend it personally. I believe it can be a great tool for those that are really dedicated, but I just find it too frustrating and unfulfilling to persisit with my own endevors. Perhaps too it would be a much better experience with a DNA kit. I want to convey there may be a lot of reasons this seemed like a poor product to me that are just things I didn't do right.

The app has performed well up until I purchased an iPad running the lasted iOS version 14.6 with an M1 chip. Since installing the app on that device the app only has partial functionality. Currently I am not able to select to view the profile of any person in my tree unless that person has a hint associated with them and then only by selecting the hint first. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app on multiple occasions. The result each time is on first starting the app I can successfully view a person’s profile but after that I can no longer view any person’s profile (unless they have a hint) including the person I successfully viewed on first start up. Two other iOS devices with A series chips running iOS 14.6 work as expected. Contacted Ancestry support and the usual response as expected was not our problem despite the fact that not one other app on the iPad with the M1 chip is exhibiting a problem. Sorry Ancestry it is your problem, it is a coding issue which is being highlighted by the difference in how your app executes on a a hardware device using different hardware architecture to iOS devices utilising A series chips.

The “modern update” is AWFUL. I wish I could go back to the “old-fashioned” version. Every change they brag about making did nothing to improve it. The icons were changed to “reflect the look of the modern family.” Instead of being bright teal and bright rose, they are now dark teal-gray and dull mauve. The difference between the male icon and unknown icon is so subtle it is barely noticeable. The dark mode does not follow the settings of the phone. You have to exit the app and go into settings to change the mode. That is so useless. The biggest problem is that the new app makes the phone run VERY HOT. There is far too much going on in the background if it cannot run cool. In just the time I am taking to write this review, my phone is finally cooling down. This app is garbage. The “new” button and the “details” button are so close together that clicking one clicks them both. Nothing is “clearer.” The font is not larger, like they claim, they just bolded everything. And the supposed contrast? Non-existent. There is much less contrast now. I have no idea who thought this was an improvement. I always give major changes like these a fair shake. I don’t dislike change. But whatever feedback of “it doesn’t look like my family,” caused them to make this monstrosity, I doubt they fulfilled it. The old app had great contrast, clear info and perfectly good sizing. This new version could cause me to stop being a subscriber. I do most of my day-to-day updates in the app. Burning up my phone in my hands is an automatic out for the Ancestry app.

Update Jan 2020. I’ve used this app for a bit over a year. I have it loaded on a tablet (iPad). It’s okay to use along with the web version on my pc, but I find it to be useless to use exclusively. I’m VERY disappointed with the full-access subscription, by the way. I wanted to be able to open newspaper obits, but for most of them (that I’ve tried) the full access ancestry membership isn’t enough. $200 for 6 months and I still can’t open the newspapers because to do so requires yet ANOTHER subscription. For me the full membership is a total waste. AND SUBSCRIBER BEWARE: The expensive subscription auto renews. When I checked about how to stop that from happening, I discovered that the only way to do that is to cancel the whole subscription and thereby FORFEIT THE REMAINING TIME and no refund. I didn’t expect a refund, but I thought I should be able to at least continue to use the subscription for which I paid until it “ran” out — but NO. I found out the subscription stops immediately. It’s suggested that - to get the full benefit of that expensive subscription- you need to wait until the subscription is ALMOST ready to renew then cancel it (so you are only “out” a few days of it). Unfortunately, when my subscription came about due to renew, my life became exceptionally busy — so I forgot to go online to cancel it. I remembered about it two days past the renewal. So I “get” to pay another $200 when a lesser level of access would do just fine. Not happy.

This app is easy to use on the iPad and easy to navigate. My main problem with this app though is the record search. Unlike the online browser version, in this app you cannot set parameters around your searches. You cannot decide which records you wish to search (example: England, Australia, US, etc). You cannot narrow down dates, places, names specifically. You’re just stuck with a broad search that is too broad, or a narrow search that is too narrow (just by a slider). No option to choose by country. Too many records defer to the US instead of the UK and are therefore mostly irrelevant, even though my membership is for UK heritage. Also, even some UK records that come up still ask me to purchase the record, despite my membership. App developers need to fix this issue of shallow, irrelevant record searches, urgently. I’d like to have the same depth and control as I get on the browser version. Secondly, this app signs you up via iTunes to the membership of your choice. I chose the UK heritage. Unfortunately, when I went back to the browser version (because I wanted that in-depth, more controlled record search), I wasn’t able to view any records because the browser version won’t recognise my Apple purchase. Why should I have to pay twice in order to view records either in app or in browser? I’m forced instead to choose where I want to pay my membership, and for all it’s worth, there’s more value in paying the browser version than the app version because you’d getter better search options and therefore more bang for your buck. To conclude; this app version is good for show only, but a useless waste of money if you’re wanting to have reliable, in depth records searching. Pay your membership in the browser and stick to the browser for delving into records.

I have been using ancestry for many years now. By the time I became interested in research, and had the time? Sadly my parents, grandparents and most of my parent’s siblings were no longer living. A family Bible, and a family tree existed, but were never shared, on one side. Over the years ancestry has improved and is a joy to use. As with anything, you learn by trial and error. I have my dad’s side back to before the year 1,000, they were in England. I love history and details, so it is perfect. You can start a tree for free. It is the wonderful research capabilities that you pay for. If you have your settings set to public, you will eventually be able to connect with cousins and others. Please prove your work with census, birth, death, marriage, military and other records. And be careful about using info from other people’s family trees. Use only those with records proving their info. If you want an accurate tree. I have a huge tree on my dad’s side, with thousands of people. My mom’s side has been a bit more more challenging. I use the international version. I have reconnected with cousins I met as a baby, an uncle and many others. I hope that you try it, utilize it fully, and enjoy your journey.

During my experience of ancestry over the past few years, I have found it to be extremely helpful in my ancestral journey, helping me to uncover new and fascinating people and information including through the power of DNA. The only thing that I am not 100% happy with is the new update, which hides a lot of information about people including birth registers. Would love if this was rid of as I find it helpful to have as much information as possible. Other than that 5 stars from me!!

I have only had this app for a day and I already love it!!! I was sitting down with my grandma when the topic of our family heritage got brought up, and that’s when this app came into play. Recently I have become intrigued in my ancestry, and have been wanting to try a fan test for a while. This app has helped me organise my family tree and has given multiple accurate hints on my family tree. Although I have no payment plan on the app, it is still pretty useful without, especially if you already have some knowledge about your roots. I am out to try the dna test, which comes in a wide variety of options, depending on which one suits your personal preferences. I hope to continue my path into finding my family legacy in hopes to find out something new from the tests.

I don't normally write reviews but i feel like what has happened with this app deserves one. They change your DNA results very often. I went from having over 40% Scottish ancestry to having 20% then suddenly having cornwall and the czech republic as ancestry matches. If this is from a dna strain then our results should not change this drastically. Also the many stories i have from my family history are all from Scotland and Ireland. I am second generation Scottish immigrant so how is this even possible? My grandparents immigrated to America. And my great grandparents on my on my fathers side escaped the Irish famine. Another problem i have noticed is the traits are very wrong, for example - it says i do not have freckles, i have many many freckles. I am extremely athletic but the app says i have leas athletic ability then the normal human when i actually have better endurance than most, i absolutely hate the taste of cilantro it tastes like soap to me - but the app says i love it, i have dimples but the app says i do not, i have adhd and cannot focus but the app says it is easy for me, i cannot handle hot weather but the app says i have good heat tolerance, mosquitos eat me alive but the app says i am less likely to be bit by them. Everything seems wrong and backwards and i am upset because i paid for the traits. Unfortunately if this is truly a dna test these things should not be changing

Hi this site is amazing with all of the hints that we get and it goes even deeper with documents like Birth, Marriages and death notices. I did however get stuck on my Father’s side of the family but Genealogical DNA testing will also help with that. This is where I think that Ancestry should allow us to upload our DNA results from other genealogical research sites like My Heritage I guess I will have to pay again to get DNA kit for Ancestry. Hopefully I can find a package that will test for both parental lineage.

Using app for a long time. It is really intuitive and allows easy access to the main areas. It is easy to use and quick responses. You really need to do the DNA test to generate multiple responses. Ancestry seems to be poor on Irish HINTS for people who remained in Ireland but very good on Irish people who emigrated to USA and UK.

I have quite a lot of information already in The Ancestry Family Tree site since I began tracing my family History some years back. I have taken a bit of a break from it, but now I have an iPad and I thought I would see what the ANCESTRY APP was like when I found out there was one. It is amazing - I have just downloaded the APP - and there is all my family stuff entered over the years all there - how wonderful, and of course I now have loads more to add. This is great! In just a few moments I have been able to add images of electoral roles which came up as suggestions on various members on my tree. I quickly purchased a month's subscription. No hard slog looking for things - they were right there and being an iPad it is so easy to enlarge up the image before adding it to the tree. I can see me becoming a bit obsessed with family history again! Update: it continues to be very useful and lots of improvements. Now if you visit a relative and maybe they have old historic photos you can photograph with your smartphone & upload to the person in the tree. Love having my family tree with me all the time in my phone App.

I started my quest in 1983, to trace my family lines as far back as I could. It stated with asking family members and many times getting information that was wrong or they forgot. I traced a couple major lines back 7 generations with old bibles and traveled to many libraries and I felt I had exhausted my leads, and then joined Ancestry in 2003. I have now traced my family tree back to the 1100’s on every single line on my tree and now have over 29,000 records in my tree. Not every green leaf or hint is for the individual in your tree you have to vet the information. Ancestry must have an incredible staff loading records of births, deaths, immigration, wills, census record, church record and photos from past events. In 2013, I added the European records to take my records back even further to the families beginnings. The DNA that was added a few years ago has turbo charged my trace again. I have been finding cousins from ancestors siblings that I never knew existed. Perhaps, if that were not enough, the collaboration of others searching shared ancestry are in most cases willing to reach out to give assistance. Likewise, some will also ask for help. My experience with ancestry has also helped me refocus my energy into a legacy that I can pass on to future generations and pass the torch. I have even considered doing my passion on a full time basis. I recommend Ancestry, if you have a passion to find your family’s beginnings. Thank you.

Of all the family tree sites this is by far the easiest to navigate . Simple to use..once you establish some basic family dates of birth etc it’s easy to build a family tree . Care is needed to check hints don’t assume a hint is a fact you need to be sure before accepting one.. so you do need to do some thinking and checking dates etc before you accept hints. It’s still easy to use..if your not sure you can select Maybe and come back to that hint later once you have more information . You can also see other trees and connect with others working on trees. DNA , this is the biggest data base so more links . This app is easy to use on a iPad…but I do find some work I need the web site for it. Especially which looking for other “family trees “option .

A couple is not always husband and wife; please update to indicate wife of wife when spouse is listed as female.

Visualisation for family brings lot of collateral knowledge about family previously unknown. Remember me 🎶

Nice app, but the fact that it doesn’t show the ancestors‘s siblings unless you view there family tree is a bit annoying unlike the website which does show the siblings. I suggest that you add this feature to the app as it takes a while to remember the aforementioned siblings.

Merci! Très sincèrement vôtre Myckaël Fournier

Good as it goes, but you are bombarded with ‘matches’ that the innocent might be tempted to add to their tree without suitable verification. Everything costs!! Guess this is to expected as it’s a commercial site. I haven’t found a way to export a GED to another forum, maybe that’s intentional or maybe I just haven’t found the correct protocol. Over all one of the better apps with the above caveats

this application is very useful. Great app for family

The interface is a backwards step compared to the much cleaner more intuitive previous version. I see you are trying to bring it in line with the stand alone DNA Ancestry app... there’s a reason I never use that app! The only plus is that the matches have been added back into the main interface. Otherwise bad - Additional clicks now needed to navigate managed DNA accounts. - group marker management now needs additional steps to add / remove from shared matches. - in fact, I can’t even find where I can add /remove the assigned groups... actually I just discovered that I need to hold and push the match to get at the required menu... maybe others find that intuitive... - how can I navigate through matches to see them from other managed accounts. It was very handy in the previous version when I could see a match was a cousin of my father and a second cousin of my other relative whom I manage. Can find that functionality without navigating out of one managed account, back in to the other one and hopefully finding the same person on the other account. All in all I’m afraid this update is a shambles. And please note I love using this app.... till now anyways

I have spent many hours days researching my family history, on Ancestry. I also took a DNA test and the results I find fascinating and have connected with many relations on both sides of my family. At the moment I am having difficulty in following research on my paternal great grandfather David Griffiths . I thought that he was divorced but then somebody else had him as deceased but this was prior to the birth of my great grandmother. I must try again to find the missing parts of my research. I have been amazed with how my research has given me information which I did not know . My grandparents lived in wern Ganol cottages and in the 1st cottage lived her uncle and his family and I was unaware that they were related , although I'spent many hours at my grandparents house. Also I did not know until I sent for my grandfather's birth certificate that my great grandmother was Irish. I am now putting photos on my tree so that family members can now have their own identity. This is a very useful site but I think people need to be more careful when accepting hints. Sometimes hints are suggested which unavoidably involve someone with the same first name and surname as someone in the family but they may be from a different family. Because sometimes these hints are accepted as belonging to a particular tree when they do not an incorrect family may become attached which is difficult to correct. People post photographs in good faith which have been incorrectly identified. You actually need to have traced your family yourself from primary sources such as Civil Registrations of Births, Deaths and Marriages, Parish Records, Wills and other sources before you can accept hints and attach individuals and facts to your ancestors. It is difficult to have corrections made but otherwise it is a very useful website. Thank you. Gael Phillips Australia

The app is very well designed. Layout and actions make it easy to do genealogy one-handed :) with most bread and butter tasks a tap or context menu away. Good integration with Ancestry features is invaluable. However, the app is visually plain, with the overuse of flat design at times rendering actionable areas non-obvious, resulting in not infrequent hunting and pecking. A bit of Beverly or drop shadow or even simple coloring or outlining would render actionable areasvisually distinctive. The old faux leather look is definitely missed. Visual aesthetics should not be underestimated in making the app experience pleasurable.

I have managed to find many lines of family since I joined Ancestry. Yes you have to learn your way about, but I just took one step at a time. Asking questions with some of the groups on Facebook. One of the most useful tools on Ancestry is looking at other members trees that include someone from my tree. By contacting these members with the message part of the site, there is much information to be had. Even finding family photographs that I had never seen. I have contacted a few 2nd cousins who I now talk to on the phone gaining some amazing family stories and character references. I have been paying £20 per month, which for me is quite a bit, but I got so much good information that I would not have gained from just buying certificates (which are just as important). I am able to cancel the subscription and start it up at a later date which helps with my budget. Great job Ancestry 5 Stars 👌

The UI is very stylish and pretty, but it still needs some work. The app abbreviates names which are too long to display in the pre-determined UI without my permission, rather than adapting the UI to the name like other genealogical apps do. This is frankly irritating, as people with shorter names are the exception rather than the rule in the world. If you fix this problem, ancestry will become my favorite family tree maker. Until then, I recommend sticking to other apps, especially to those of us of non-Anglo-Saxon background. Another thing that I also request is the ability to manually establish the children’s order of birth even though you lack a birth date. Children should not be ordered alphabetically if they have no birth dates. They should be ordered by input. I am a historian who uses this app to organize my research. Often the more obscure historical figures have only death dates and no birth dates. I need to be able to manually place the birth order of children.

I would always recommend using the website for deeper research but this app is really handy especially when visiting archives when you can’t bring in a laptop etc. When checking hints, photos are really easy, but checking information is a little more difficult as it’s hard to compare all the data of a record due to screen size etc. I would stick to the website for that. Viewing the entire tree is easy and panning around is very user friendly. I would recommend the app for anyone who is a bit obsessed with research! Comprehensive for top layer info but does not reach the depths, but that’s the limitations of an app.
