I have had this app before and I remembered it so I redownloaded it then i did the questions at the beginning and then it took me to this page where it wouldn’t let me proceed and didn’t have and x or skip option and it was making me but premium or something and I just wanted to use the free options and it just wouldn’t let me use the app at all until I paid for something, it was stupid if the app is free then why do I have to pay for something to actually use it, there was no lead up no warning to it not being free and now I’m upset

Only a few free sounds. Not worth a penny

I’ve used this app since 2014. It’s been getting worse slowly but surely. Adding premium features is normal, but taking away free features and locking them behind subscriptions? That’s just dirty. I caved last year and bought the lifetime membership because I had a newborn. Now it’s asking for a subscription?? No thanks, especially with how buggy it’s been. I’ll go back to an old school sound machine.

Been using this app for years with no issues and all of a sudden today my personal mix of sounds is no longer free almost no sounds are available in the free version as of June 10th 2026

Sad to download this all after two years of not having it (before I’ve had it for 6 years thanks to my grandma), and to see it now having to pay. I’m not using the free trial considering it’ll be a waste of time anyways for me personally and when I want something I want it fully, not like this. Sure some sounds before we’re locked and premium but now to just use it completely is money? Bs.

This is the first review I have ever written. I’ve been using this app for years. First it was free, then a year or two ago there was a lifetime subscription that I paid for, now there a monthly (or yearly) fee to pay? It’s like my lifetime subscription never even mattered. I cannot afford a monthly subscription, so I guess I have to find another app! Sucks, I used this app constantly!

I have used this app every single night for probably a decade. A few years ago, this app BEGGED you to spare a few dollars to support the app. If you didn’t respond and pay, they slowly started taking away features of the app. Eventually, I paid a few dollars for permanent use of the app. Last night, I go to play my usual mix. I see everything is behind a paywall besides a few random noises. This app is now asking for a monthly subscription. After a decade I’m officially turned off by this app and will be seeking alternate options. “You will own nothing and be happy” Not me!

The intro took me through several questions then appeared it would automatically sign me up for the trial. No thank you. Tired of sneaky apps. Deleted it immediately.

I’ve been using this app for 8+ years. It was the best and free forever. Used it every night for those 8 years religiously. Last year they had a 80$ payment for a lifetime (one time) subscription. Now it’s asking for 3$ a month? This app was great and it’s fallen from the heavens. Sad to say it’s not worth it anymore. Also sends a ridiculous amount of notifications at midnight (up from 1 a few years ago). One is okay- stop sending 4-6 every single night. I hate to see it go- used the same mix every single night. Lost my business. Also @corp- stop responding saying you need to update the app. It’s legit a 5 min sound recordings played on a loop :(. Stop adding bad extra features!

I paid for a premium plan back in June 2025 as a forever plan and now it’s acting like that never happened and now wants a recurring subscription. Been using this for years and all the changes and trying to get more money out people is going too far. Removing this from my phone.

Disappointed. This app really is not useful. Provides incorrect sleep insights. Collects data during onboarding but dumps you into a wide pool of resources for you to figure it out. Hopefully you provide better guidance and useful help.

When I first started using this app all of the sounds were free. Then they started doing the subscription for the meditations.. now you have to pay for the subscription to use everything except for 3 sounds ☹️ very disappointing!! I just ended up deleting the app.. tired of having subscriptions for everything.

I really love the is app, but just became super bummed out to see that my presets (mixes) that I’ve used for YEARS for FREE have now been sat behind another pay wall….. i can’t even use the app anymore smh. Lost my subscription and service by adding more pay walls to stuff that was originally FREE! Smh I WILL BE UNINSTALLING

I’ve used, loved, and (off and on for years) paid for this app. I love the variety of sounds and the ability to mix them as well as the flexible timer. There have always been some sounds behind a paywall and occasionally I’ve decided I’d like to use those and paid for a year. Then some years I’ve used only what’s free. As of today, 6/8/2026, there are now only 6 free sounds. Sad to see it go but I’m not interested in being forced to pay for something for even the minimum enjoyment.

Been using this app for years. Loved it, sounds were great. All of a sudden you have to pay an egregious amount to use the sounds now. It’ll be a struggle to adjust to new sounds but I’m not paying another subscription for just some sounds, that’s absurd.

As a person who benefits from winding down and preparing for sleep, I was really looking forward to this app. The first night I found this great brain wave sound that was very calming but the next night I tried to find the same thing and couldn’t. For me, there’s too much music and too much guided meditation. Those things actually bring out unpleasant feelings for me. I really just want calming, relaxing sounds. The app was complicated to navigate. It would be nice to just be able to find your history and return easily to what works for you. Lots of choices, but for me, it was overwhelming.

Greedy

I wanted to just download an app for playing white noise and it took me multiple minutes of going through slow animated screens just to figure out I couldn't without signing up for a trial. Not user friendly

I already subscribed, yet you logged me out, don’t recognize me, and are blocking me from using my own mix as recently as YESTERDAY!! What a ripoff!

Got this app years ago and loved that the sound scapes WERE free to use. Then over time of course more and more features became less available. And now nearly everything is pay to use. That’s fine… but I guess I need to find a different app to use now.

I used this App for 3, 4, 5 years. Not really sure, but I loved it. If all you want is just basic rain/white noise, it has it and it’s “free”…well at least it was 😥. I went to sleep with this app every night, even while on travel. So imagine my surprise when I tried to use it a couple nights ago only to find that it’s no longer free. Don’t get me wrong, I understand that a lot of apps offer a free trial period, but this wasn’t one of those. It’s like they said, “Hey we’re going to let you use this app for free for a long time, but now that we have you addicted to, we’re going start charging you “Yep even for the basic sounds.” To that I say, “thank you, but no thank you!” I have managed to find another “free app” and so far so good! Good Night 💤

I purchased the full app when it was Relax Melodies, but now I’m being asked to purchase it again for $11.99/year. When I purchased prior, it was $10 one time payment. Great app, but not paying for it again. Going to find something else that doesn’t keep charging for something already purchased.

Don’t get the app if you want it for free you have to play to be able to access the app

Paid for premium, now everything that unlocked is back behind a subscription. Uninstalling and seeking a refund. Hard to believe this is ok, or even legal. I must have missed some fine print somewhere.

I use this app daily for almost 5 years and when they took away a huge chunk of the free items it ended up permanently ruining my circadian rhythm and subsequently affecting my health. It took me years to heal from the damage from it occasionally the sound will go back on for free, but I can’t use this app because the moment they take the sound away again my health collapses. Don’t develop too much of a reliance on this app because it will backfire on you big time. They basically made a pay to sleep and requirement so he’d my warning change. Your sounds often or pick a different thing because they definitely are not gonna care about you and you’re not going to get “better sleep”.

Used it for years for one simple white noise sound. Respected the paywall around the fancy stuff - no problem! Last night, suddenly, endless popups telling me to subscribe to use the sound I’ve used for years. “White noise” is now behind the 99c/month paywall. “Oh,” you might say, “99c/month is not bad!” Is a single white noise sound worth $400+ over the rest of my life?? Have we lost our minds????? They make white noise machines for $15. Those have a manufacturing cost. Uninstalling.

I’ve been using this app for about a year and a half. I have serious issues falling and staying asleep and I’m grateful for what it has done for me. But getting ready to go to bed and suddenly finding that it’s locked behind a paywall is disgusting. Guess I’ll be buying a fan to run in the bedroom at night again.

On of my worst nights of sleep, Better Sleep gave me a score of over 90, recording over an hour and half of deep sleep. Yet both Apple Health and Athyletic calculated very low scores in the 40’s with 12 minutes of deep sleep. I would not recommend this app to anyone who wants to track their sleep because it is ridiculously off the mark.

Use to be a good app but has made its self completely useless anymore. Time for something else.

I’ve been using this app for about 10 years to listen to the same 5 sounds for sleep. Me and my wife bought the lifetime subscription when it was $99 but lost access to the account. Every update this little app adds more things I don’t want or need and takes more and more away from what I use it for. Logged on tonight and it only lets me use one sound. I’m sure if you use all the other features this might be a great deal but the once simple little audio app is leaving us behind. Time to look elsewhere. So long BetterSleep looks like I’ll find my get my sleep sounds from YouTube.

I cant afford this anymore 🥲 The app is great, but definitely not the choice on a budget. You can only use about 5 sounds or so without paying a monthly fee. Ive used this app for years now and its sad to see greed take over like this.

I made a custom sleep sound by combining 5 or 6 sounds into a soothing mix. I used that mix for years but now only one of the sounds is available without paying. I understand paying for upgraded features, but requiring pay for things that have been free for years is obnoxious. Off to find another app.

Sorry but considering me and plenty of others have used this app consistently for years and now with no warning pretty much everything you have to pay to use? It’s simple sounds that 100+ other apps are offering. Deleting this app for good

This is become pure greed. I understand they benefit from the good ratings, but those ratings are based on prior experiences when the app was free. It is completely necessary to purchase now in order to use. Quite disappointed, will not pay a monthly fee. I’m sorry. Thanks for the years of use.

I signed up for the 7-day free trial (there’s no free tier) because of the high rating and they said they’d notify me before it expires. The content is decent, but the app is clunky and I only opened it once. What pushed me to write this was trying to leave. They promise a reminder one day before the trial ends so you can cancel. I never got it. I only caught it because I checked on my own today, the day before a $69.99 charge. Then canceling turned out to be what I can only describe as deliberately hard. The Manage Subscription screen lets you switch between paid plans instantly, but there is no cancel button anywhere. You have to dig through Help articles that point you to an email and a different process depending on how you signed up. I went through Apple, so I got out, but they do not make it easy. Even that doesn’t warrant a two star review. But I wanted give people (like me) a heads up about canceling so I clicked on ’Rate Our App’ bringing up a screen asking “Do you love BetterSleep?” I tapped No and was routed back to the help section with a feedback form. Instead, I went back and tapped Yes and only then did it send me to the App Store. So the store only ever hears from people who love the app. Shady. UPDATE: I downgraded to a 1 star review. Look at ’most recent’ reviews and the story is clear it’s gone down the tubes. The star rating and review summary does not reflect the current app. I hit all three of these things in my first week. If that’s how they operate this early, I have to assume it runs through everything else too. God knows where my data is going. Life’s too short to deal with companies like that. I think I’m going to sleep like a baby tonight.

I’m so disappointed to find that they’re now charging for damn near everything! I’ve been using this app for years and now all of a sudden there’s about 5 sounds that are free. Being mostly free was what made this app different, now they got greedy like everyone else. People can’t even afford gas or groceries, let alone “luxuries” like sleep; so disgusting!

I paid $5 after already having used the app for my daughters sleep sounds and they all of a sudden wanted payment. Now that payment goes towards nothing? I opened the app again a couple months later and now they’re charging a monthly fee. So my money went towards nothing and I should’ve just found another app already.. because who charges for the sound of rain? Bonkers.

It’s very disappointed that the BetterSleep app put almost every sound behind a pay wall now. There are maybe 23 sounds that you can actually use without without paying. This makes the app utterly useless. I’ve chosen to use the built-in Apple sound generator.

I’ve used this app nightly for years and have loved it. Just went to turn it on tonight before bed to find that they’ve randomly locked it behind a paywall. Just wanted to listen to a fan sound so i could sleep. So disappointing.

This app is garbage. They constantly make changes to the app and increase prices so don't even waster your time trying to find a sound you like because they will just require you to spend more money later to keep using it. Horrible customer service and the app is difficult to use. No thank you!

Listen, I have been using this app for years. It has the best sounds and ability to mix sounds for sleep. That being said, it is extremely glitchy and often crashes. What’s worse, today I opened it and all of sudden the free sounds I have been using for years are now “premium” and I need to pay an annual fee. I literally do not use ANYTHING else in this app. No meditations, no sleep stories, no sleep tracking. Nothing. I just want the sound mix. And they have the nerve to make the one feature that has been free now be premium. It is extremely frustrating and I will be trying to find another app with the same quality sounds without the constant crashing and surprise charges.

I told offered 7 day trial. When i signed up it was for a year of service without 7 day trial. Trying to get a refund has been a pain in the a**

BEWARE. This app no longer works properly as of 6/2/26. Now any decent sounds require payment. So I will be deleting this app & finding something else.

i grew up using this app, i got it many years back when it was nearly all free. i used to love the app and used it every night. i have insomnia and this app would help me. i stopped using it for a while and came back to it tonight and now nearly everything is paid for. i understand money needs to be made to keep an app going but it’s not something i can afford. i really wish this app hadn’t turned into this it makes me sad that i can no longer use it.

This app was my go to. It was the first one that popped up when I first considered sleep sounds, now THUNDERSTORMS ARE NOT AVAILABLE!!!! I have OCD having my sleep sounds change (I must pay for it??? On top of everything else right now??? Gas prices!!!$??? In this economy?!????!!) You’d think you would be able to sleep for free? NOPE. Been loyal for 5 years to this app, only used thunderstorms and rain sounds. DONT WASTE YOUR TIME!!

I’ve been using this app for years and it’s been one of the only things that have helped with my sleep. I’ve raved and put so many people on to it, only to open it today and find that mixes i’ve had for years are now behind a pay wall. I even tried to make new mixes but there were only 15 out of the 300+ sounds that were still free to use. Extremely disappointed is an understatement. I will be deleting this app and only returning if this is rectified.

I opened my app tonight to use it, only to find that every sound on my mic was made premium since the last time I used it. This is incredibly disappointing as I have used this app for a long time. I loved the versatility and ability to edit mixes. I was really looking forward to my mix that I had perfected. And now it feels like there is a very very very slim variety of sounds I can use. Very disappointed.

This used to be an amazing app. If you bought the premium app (one time purchase, for the premium version of the app) you got access to the entire app and features. Then they changed to the monthly plans. This change was done without notification to the user, which goes against the terms and conditions of purchase of the premium version of the app. They have also started using AI for customer service, writing the meditations, the stories, etc.

Honestly so sad to even be writing this review as I’ve used this app since I was in college in 2016 and have loved everything about it. I curated my perfect bedtime mix of slow waves and waterfall only to find out tonight that I now have to pay to access these sounds. I’m so disappointed as this was by far my favorite white noise app, but now I will be finding a different app as I refuse to pay for something I’ve had access to for years. BetterSleep you just lost a loyal user :(

They have made pretty much all sounds cost money now. Go find a better option, thank me later. Also can’t wait to see the bs canned response about how this is a paid service when it has not been for as long as I remember it.

I haven’t been a user since before the name change and everything. So almost 7 years? New update made paywall even worse. Paid because I wanted to sleep and didn’t want go throw finding other apps but now that it is worse, will be finding other apps. May just put on YouTube.

I’ve had this app for 5+ years and i used to rate it 5 stars. However, over time, every last sound i use to sleep has become a sound o have to pay for.. That is ridiculous and honestly a shame. I will be deleting this app now because what i’ve used for every sleep over the past few years is not the same as it once was.

I had the app years ago and while some stuff cost money A bunch of stuff was free. I got a new phone and downloaded the app. It had me go through. Bunch of questions about my sleep then hit me with a “7 day free trial” screen. So now apparently the download is free but you have to pay to actually use the app. Scam and such a difference form the great way it used to be. I am so disappointed and will no longer be using the app. Don’t download even if it says app is free u will have to pay 😡 😭

TLDR: used to be free and good, then required to pay for the app to keep using it, now requiring a monthly subscription to keep using it even though I previously paid. Time to find a new app. I've had this app for a long time, since before it had its current name. I don't use all of the "fancy" features but I do have a custom mix of multiple different water sounds (rain, stream, waterfall, etc). A while back they put a lot of the sounds I used behind a pay wall, or possibly, even the ability to use the app at all. I forget exactly. It was a free app and then they made it like $1.99 or something like that. I paid for it just for the convenience of keeping my mix. Up until two nights ago, everything was fine. Last night I went to play my mix and only 1 of my 5 sounds would play. It is now forcing me to pay a subscription of $1.99/mo to use my sounds and upon further looking, it appears most of the sounds in the app are now behind the subscription. Remember, I paid for this app. Now I have to pay a subscription to keep using it? No thanks. Time to find a better app. Thanks for screwing over customers that already paid to use your app.

This app has great content, BUT beware of them taking money out of your account after you cancel your subscription. I canceled my subscription to this app in my settings and never renewed it. They decided they were going to steal my money from me. Watch out.
