why is it so difficult to export articles? should be an option to switch storage to a user accessible folder in the iOS files app

Serious problems synching with the Economist app. Some articles do not appears. The ones that do, cannot be read because only the headline is present.

Sometimes works to rip content from Apple News to Instapaper. Sometimes the same content provider works, and sometimes it does not. Worth a subscription: probably not if Instapaper can't improve the quality of its output.

This was a generally great app for my needs. I am much more of an auditory absorber of information and this app was generally very good at it. But with the new “AI” voices update, the overall user experience has degraded. I am looking forward to the future improvements so I can return to my five star appreciation

Sometimes I wonder if companies even test or use their own products. For me, the most important feature of Instapaper is highlighting text and making notes. The good news: I can highlight text and make a note. More good news: I can view the highlights and notes (via a dialog box) by opening the ellipses menu and selecting “View Notes”. The bad news: there is no way to close the dialog and return to the article. I need to Force Quit the application every time. I guess I’ll be using Weava or Web Highlights. *sigh* In case the developers are reading this… I’m on MacOS and I would have rated Instapaper through your app (Setting → Rate Instapaper) but that menu item doesn’t work either.

Tried to read some recently saved articles and waited over five minutes while it slowly loaded old articles one by one but wouldn't show me any of my recent saves. I thought maybe I was too optimistic about my sync settings, so I set the sync settings to the lowest amount. Didn't help. Uninstalled, restarted phone, reinstalled with lowest sync settings... again, one by one my older articles were slowly loaded at a pace of maybe one every 8 to 10 seconds, and I couldn't refresh to get the new saves. What is the point of this? How is this convenient if, by the time the app is ready to show me the article I wanted to read, my window for reading it (say, over a very quick breakfast) has closed? Am I supposed to wait, after saving an article, until the next day to read it, or would the app just continue to slowly load up old content at its leisure while ignoring me? Do I need to keep it open and on screen for one or more *hours* before I can start using it? I paid for premium, too, so i feel like a rube who just wasted his money. Back to Reader, I guess, even though its parsing engine gets worse by the month. At least with Reader I can access my saved content a few seconds after saving.

Revision: I’m revising my rating from 4 stars to two. Not only does the new version hang when transitioning to and from the car but you have to get all the way out, delete finished stories and create a new playlist but you still can’t forward to the next story without finishing the current one. It glitches though as it hangs when it is synced with my car and I get a call. It’s really hard to get it going again without stopping the car. There also needs to be a way to skip to the next story without having to scroll to find where it is at on the list. It should really just work like the iPhone music app

Update: $60 a year is absurd! Told you so! OG review: I used to pay for Instapaper, then it was sold and went free, now it’s back to a pay service. In that transition I’ve lost hundreds of articles. Graduate research, personal project research, recipes, and long form articles… all gone. No notices given about exceeding data use, or a purge of articles before X date, just gone... Don’t trust this service with anything you value or might need to reference in the future. Lesson learned.

Looking for a Pocket replacement that isn’t a mess. Came here from Raindrop after they added AI junk to their service. Now Instapaper will hallucinate the contents of articles for me, or read it out in a creepy AI voice. I can’t wait for this bubble to pop and these tech companies to stop chasing this awful trend.

The only reason on bought the app was so I could save articles and have the app read them to me while I am on the road. It is extremely choppy and you cannot even listen to it. I kept thinking it was a bug that they would fix. Nothing yet and it’s been about 2 months.

In order to read entire articles from the NYT in Instapaper, I signed in with my NYT subscription info. Now it won’t stop downloading EVERY article from the NYT. As in HUNDREDS of unwanted articles. I have disconnected my NYT account, checked for connections to RSS feeds, deleted and redownloaded Instapaper… no change. It’s maddening.

Every time I try to swipe to turn the page it turns on the useless AI summary feature. And there’s no way to disable this. Newsflash bozos… I use this app to actually READ. Instapaper's support website provides two methods of contacting support: Twitter/X and an email account. I no longer have a Twitter/X account, so when I had a problem with a feature that was provided with my newly purchased premium subscription, I used the email account provided. I immediately received a bounce-back stating "The user you are trying to contact is receiving mail at a rate prevents additional messages from being delivered." Over the last two weeks I've followed up three more times with this address. I didn't recieve bounc-back emails, but I have yet to recieve an acknowledgement of my emails. I've asked for a refund of premium at this point and may have to result to a charge back if I can't use the features I've paid for. If you're getting value with the free account, Instapaper is still great. But don't count on being able to contact support if you have problems. As such, avoid the premium service. Which is sad, Instapaper must surely need the revenue but they need to provide some level of customer support if they're providing a paid service.

Are you ok with turning off every ad blocker possible in 2023 just to save a we article in a reading environment? Are you ok with 1-3 of every 10 of those saved articles being processed incorrectly and just being a lump of code when you open it in app? In 2015 this would have been acceptable and a serviceable app. In 2023, you have many many better options. Customer support for premium subscribers is almost non existent, being incredibly slow and ineffective. I saw responses in about a week and the responses to my inquiries were often one line responses like “We were unable to replicate this issue.” With no other help. The next response would take 4 days. Walk on by this app, you can do much better.

Instapaper mostly works great! I often use it to transfer articles to my Kobo. It often misses images, which isn’t usually a big deal. It usually fails to import academic articles, especially those that I have access via a redirect to my University’s library. It also tends to split lines in half after the first few pages of reading. It will show the top half of the letters in a line on one page, and then the bottom half of those letters on the next page. Other than these relatively small issues, it is working well for me!

I updated the app on my ipad, but I'm so disappointed with it that I have decided not to update my iphone. As other people have said, the new font is too small, and I haven't found a way to change the font. Second, I can't find a way to share an article via email. At least on the ipad, the share option is missing. Please add this back!

Current review: The latest update made the type too small for the list of saved stories. Please bring back the larger type size for the list of saved stories. Earlier review: Now that Pocket is closing shop, I needed an alternative. I like to find music on my iPad by listening to YouTube videos in the Brave browser. When I would find an album that I might want to purchase, I would save it to Pocket, open Pocket on my Mac, click on the YouTube video, and then watch the video in the Brave browser on my Mac which is connected to my home stereo music system. Now I can use Instapaper instead of Pocket, and it works perfectly just like Pocket. Nice! I am so happy about how well Instapaper works now.

The new 10.0 update makes everything I love about Instapaper even better. The new UI makes affordances clearer. The new fonts are thoughtfully chosen. And article counts in the menu tell me just how many articles I haven’t read yet! Great work as ever; I’m proud to be a subscriber.

The cost per year to store some small text files, I just don't see how the cost is worth it. It's a shame, too, since many of us have tons of paid but unused cloud storage on plans like Google Drive, iCloud, etc, which would hardly feel the impact of storing the metadata associated with highlights and very small text comments. I know that the ongoing cost is for this service effectively being a mirror of the readable internet (which is very admirable, and I think underappreciated service provided by sites like archive.org). But personally, I'm fine with only having my local copy of article data for a significantly reduced cost. Or perhaps they could create a middle tier that blends the benefits of medium-term storage, and upselling to the archive.org promise of trying to mirror websites forever. I just love the reading experience this app provides and would really recommend it if I could buy the app for $10-20 and had the option to bring my own storage to avoid a subscription cost.

It downloads articles from an IFTTT RSS feed I set up more than a decade ago for reading them when I'm in questionable cell reception. Period. That's all I want it to do and it never fails. I use Instapaper dozens of times a day and it's amazing how well it works. The one or two times I've had an issue the developers, who are maybe three people, are courteous, friendly, and extremely helpful. Download this, you will not regret it. You'll be happy that you did.

Saving articles is so fast and easy and this app does it so well. I’m so impressed by how easy it works, and I only have the free version. The premium version doesn’t really have many features that I want but I would happily pay money for additional features like word counts, more sorting options, more data displays at the top of articles, etc. I also love how easy it is to send links to friends, I was worried I wouldn’t be able to send links from within the app but that works great too.

Today I installed Instapaper on my phone. I use it mostly for reading articles and papers that I gleaned from the internet. It’s a good utility to have. I am even paying for a monthly subscription. I like the fact that users can choose their background, style and size of fonts and make notes about what they are reading. But when it comes to highlighting text we are given only one color option: Yellow! Really? What I would like for Instapaper’s developers to do is give us MORE options than just yellow for highlighting text! You know: Light Blue, Pink, Green and the ability to underline text in Red! I would love to give this app a Five-Star rating! I really would! But alas, because I am limited to a yellow highlighter, I cannot! And, I am afraid, I cannot recommend this app to others.

It’s fantastic at stripping the garbage out of articles, in my RSS feed, and in Google News, just giving me the content. From the app it’s easy to share content via email or text. I do pay for premium and am a longtime user. The only features that I find somewhat lacking are the AI summaries and the now lost ability to share articles automatically to sites like Bluesky or X.

Tried it, didn’t keep it. I liked the UI and had no initial pains with saving from my usual spots (Apple News, web articles, emails). I REALLY didn’t like the TTS voices compared to those of Reader by Readwise (which admittedly is far more expensive). For me the TTS experience is crucial, so until this app’s voices no longer sound like 2014 TTS robots, I won’t be coming back.

I need a replacement for the Pocket read it later app. Although Instapaper seems to be the best alternative right now, it falls short of what I was used to. It has gotten better and the minimalist UI is still great. But with its price increase, it could have done much more than simply offer tags and AI summaries. Why have they never invested in better TTS licensing or voice controls? It’s remained minimal, with no effort for more than a decade to improve the audio reading experience. The app could improve the ability to simplify webpages. I still get too many broken links or messages that Instapaper couldn’t access a page. This actually worked better in the past.

Pocket refugee here with problems importing saves from Pocket. I selected the import function and imported the file provided by Pocket. If I sort my saves from oldest to newest in the app, it only shows saves going back a few years. If I sort by oldest to newest in a browser, Instapaper shows all my saves going back to 2014. Why does the app truncate my saves? What am I doing wrong or is this a glitch? Thanks. ***Update: I see now that you need to change order in the app. Why do you limit to 500 articles, or do you charge extra to display more in app?

I love Instapaper and have used it for several years. However, I find the price for the new subscription premium really out of proportion for what seems like a relatively simple app. I would be very happy to pay another five or $10 one-off to upgrade my premium, or maybe $1 a month, if you can’t exist without subscription model. I only really need premium for full text search and no note limit. should these pretty basic functions really cost $6 a month? I would expect that the majority of users would feel the same way. I feel this has become a luxury app only for people with high incomes, which seems a shame. Surely if it was cheaper, you could get a lot more people contributing.

I’m a long time user and I love the simplicity as well as the latest features. Still, I mostly listen to articles and I’m getting tired of sharing them from Instapaper to Speechify so I can hear them from a high quality automated voice. Instapaper’s low quality speech feature is a non-starter for me and now, with many publishers featuring high quality AI voices, I find myself clicking back to original articles to listen which also defeats the purpose of IP. One last thing: I don’t know if there is an upgrade to Instapaper Save on MacOS. On Sequoia, I haven’t been able to save to particular IP folders. Thanks, in advance, for your attentiveness and dedication to an overall great product!

I really like Instapaper, it makes digesting long articles a lot easier and you can do it straight from the web. Their interface is a little more user friendly compared to the original websites though. I can't seem to highlight singular words on websites themselves, but it works fine in their interface. Also, please add compatibility for tables and charts! Images work great but tables get really messed up.

I’ve been using this on and off for over a decade. Yeah, Pocket caught my eye and I was on it for a bit but I am back to Instapaper for good because it’s simply better. It focuses on what the user needs, not what can make the company money. Pocket harvests your data and makes you pay for text while showing you ads. Instapaper simply lets you save what YOU want to read later. It doesn’t tell you what to read. Doesn’t have a need to try to entice you into staying on the app in hopes you read a suggested article so they get a cut of the ad money. Their premium features are very few but worth it if you like them and they don’t nag you to upgrade. If Mozilla really cared about user privacy like they claim they’d have integrated this app into their browser rather than the other one which may look slick but doesn’t offer much. Speaking of looks, the minimal design of Instapaper is everything you need in this app. No need to complicate it any further. I love this and always will.

I had been long considering switching to a different read-it-later app when I discovered this one and after seeing the interface and features, I was ready to jump ship from my old app. However, a huge downside for me was discovering that a feature as simple as notes (which in this app includes basic highlighting) is locked behind a paywall and you only get 5 free per MONTH, which I promptly used up in half of my first article. Unfortunately highlighting is one of the main reasons I use apps like this, so I will have to stick with my current app. To be fair it is a beautifully made app and it works well. I would have been happy to pay for more advanced features to support the devs, but this is the only app like this that I have tried that charges for highlighting text, which is a dealbreaker.
