Just downloaded but my trial is expired?

8.3.2 · 2026/04/25 08:08 · _eascoast

1

This app must be connected to to original in terms of subscription. I’ve never used this one before but I’ve used the Readwise app; just downloaded this, signed up and it told me to subscribe to continue as my trial is expired. I can’t move past that page to even see what the app entails. Thats a real bummer, really wanted to try it as I get back into reading.

TTS broken again

7.34.2 · 2026/01/24 18:29 · Dermerat23

1

No QA testing before each update? Now when using TTS and you tap the button to jump back, it jumps ahead instead. Acceptable for a free or cheap service, not acceptable at this price.

No RSS compact view

7.26.3 · 2025/11/14 22:38 · AppRemarker

1

Unlike every other rss app or similar apps such as email clients that all offer compact view vs default or vs expanded etc, Reader still has 0 options to customize the RSS screen. Can’t hide the image, can’t hide the excerpt etc so it’s a terrible rss experience and seems more aimed for the view one would want for curated saved articles not all ones rss feeds. Every years more small random updates but this never gets addressed. So frustrating.

Last update introduced crashes.

Been us the Readeise reader app to have it read to me the details of a very large PDF and after the recent up the app crashes after about 5 minutes. This happens on both iPad and iPhone. I hope the developer fixes soon. All what good until then update yesterday.

Buggy and poor UX for reading

7.16 · 2025/08/20 00:40 · Nick ajajsjbebfkfltot

Got this because I already use readwise highlights and wanted to sync e-books and reading states across devices to my android e-reader. I don’t enjoy reading with it. I would cancel if it weren’t part of the highlights subscription which I value more. - Buggy: highlighting a word doesn’t always bring up the menu to allow highlighting. Often it mis-registers a page turn. Lots and lots of effort just to get a word definition or add a highlight. Then, - No offline/real dictionary: makes it completely unusable for difficult reads on planes and commutes so on… requires like 3 taps and 3-5 seconds of loading to get a watered-down chat-GPT definition as a highlight as opposed to a comprehensive dictionary definition. Infuriating with spotty connection, impossible with no connection. - Strange gesture controls for ebooks: No swiping left or right to change the page so all those years of muscle memory of reading real books and using a e-reader or any other reading app are really haunting me. Don’t understand why this seems not to be adjustable in the settings when other gesture controls are. Edit: further frustrations: - Can’t bookmark a page/location (I suppose you could do this with a Note or highlight but that makes no sense). Sometimes I want to return to a previous chapter or some other place in a book for reference but then I lose my current place. - No long-term saved/automatic location/progress markers. There’s a small dismissible notification which allows you to return to where you were if you jump around but once it’s gone, it’s gone. I live in fear of accidentally clicking this thing on a thousand page book I’m reading and losing where I was (it’s happened a couple times). I believe the Kindle app has this figured out, with multiple-device location. - More of a feature request: No document prioritization feature. Sometimes I just drop a bunch of things in to read later with some idea of which ones I’d like to read first. But you can’t reorder the documents in the home feed, nor can you add some sort of color or flag to mark which ones are higher priority or more important.

Missing functionality

I got this to be a good place to read all my favorite publications in one app. Unfortunately, it has been my experience that I’m unable to read any of these publications, such as the Economist, New Yorker, or History Today, in the Reader App. Whenever I try to import them, I only get the first paragraph, presumably because when Reader goes to grab the article, it does not have my credentials to access the articles behind paywalls. If I can get support to help me find a way to use Reader for my needs, I’d be happy to change this review. But until then, this app is disappointing and useless for me.

Good idea with lots of bugs without any fixes

7.1 · 2025/03/16 14:00 · Aliir74

2

The main idea is good but the app has several bugs which you encounter on a daily basis. And there isnt any way to report them easily in the app. Thats not fine with a paid app. I might cancel my subscription in the near future.

This Reader at fist glance seemed perfect but it seems to be completely missing a reading statistics page. Every reader has some type of stats page. How was this overlooked? Readers just aren’t useful to me without a way to track my reading progress

Zero statistics

6.14 · 2024/12/18 06:25 · Dave143739

1

The app is beautiful and revolutionary but it has no reading statistics which is the only feature that I wanted. Just a simple line plot showing pages read per day so I can see some type of trend to improve myself. The developers mentioned this was low on their priority list which was very sad since statistics is what set their original Readwise app apart from the competition and is why I became a Readwise user in the first place. It seems Readwise has lost the vision. If statistics are ever added to Reader, I’ll update this review to make sure it has accurate information.

Very disappointed and want a refund.

This cannot grab all of my annotations from all of my apps and put them in a single place, as I understood that it could. I am a power user on a variety of reading apps and it does not perform the key function that I wanted it for. Please contact me to discuss at least a partial refund for my annual subscription.

Great concept. Incredibly buggy

I am a paid Readwise user Trying this reader app for the first time on an epub doc. This app is elegant when it works. The voice to speech is amazing. But I find it crashing every 5 to 7 minutes. Complete freezes that require me to restart the app. I’m on latest version. The glitches happen on both my iPhone and The epub file itself works seamlessly in iBooks. Hope this app can work without crashing in the future! It would be a good business move by Readwise because I would be significantly more locked in to their ecosystem. In the meantime I’m back to iBooks, which is not nearly as elegant but just seems to consistently work.

Promising but disappointing

This app has much to like but it lacks some basic and fundamental features such as printing and export as PDF. It does a great job of formatting web pages for reading. I wanted to use it as part of my research process because I like it allows me to highlight and write notes and that I can export this notes. However, you cannot print or export as pdf. I reached out to support and I am told that this feature is not a priority and not in the plans. This is a deal breaker for me. Yes, they will claim that you print from the web reader. But what’s the point if I have an iPad app which is perfect to read but cannot export or print as pdf? This means that after I have done all my reading, highlighting and note taking that I most wait until I get to my house to sit on the computer and remember which documents I wanted to print. Yes, I could have work around to this but that’s what they are, work around. This is very disappointing when most if not all readers already have this very basic function in their apps.

Please fix YouTube playback

1

Love the idea, waited a long time for the app, but it's embarrassing how after two plus years of waiting to release the app is to this day very laggy, slow and has many bugs. Yes, native connection to readwise is cool. But being honest there are many highlighter apps that do a much better job in general. Only unique feature is taking notes on YouTube videos. And yet it is always flickering, getting stuck and so on. Please, at least fix YT playback.

subscription price makes no sense

3.30 · 2023/08/06 04:50 · MarkL1

I am not really sure why the subscription price for this product is about the same as the subscription for any magazine/newspaper subscription. All it does is reference other information and provides no distinct value on its own to warrant that price.

Not Sure Where Development Is

2

This app is awful. Kicks out all the time, loads slowly, buttons and functions are hot or miss. I think all the love this is getting with reviews are based on everything but the actual app. Where are the fixes, the response from support and any kind of indication that there is light at the end of the tunnel. I love Readwise and this product/app has all kinds of potential. Just fix it.

3.9 · 2023/03/19 19:09 · Shap08

2

This has so much potential, espeically with the AI tools and immersion reading. Unfortunetly, I haven't even been able to to test the immersion reading, its not working on epub or my PDFs. There are SO many bugs, which they acknowledge, but again, why make us pay in its current state? I look forward to testing this out more, but at this point, its just a test.

Pretty much a waste of time for me

We are constantly seeing new information, which comes to us in increasingly diverse ways. The foundational idea of read-it-later apps is that you will read something enough to know you will want read more “when you have more time.” So Reader is an extra inbox that sits between actual input and you. It can also send information to other apps, most of which have their own mechanisms for obtaining, storing and organizing data. I suppose you could spend a lot of your time moving information around, perhaps classifying it. It doesn’t seem robust enough enough to handle the volume I would need or the granularity of classification. The cost seems high too.

Best Read Later App - Hands Down

5

This is the best read-it-later app that's ever been invented. Whether you are a power user or just a simple user, for $10 a month you can completely enhance your reading experience. With advanced AI features that you can use or not use, advanced tagging system, and beautiful design, you will enjoy this app no matter the use case. I read all my articles and books through this app using my E Ink reader, and the process is seamless and beautiful. Give this app a try. Learn how to use its basics, and you won't be let down.

absolutely worth it

8.7 · 2026/06/30 15:22 · thesupremecourt

5

this is the only app I’ve found worth paying a yearly subscription for. impeccable interface. so easy to use, yet so many awesome features. when I first started using Reader, I was between jobs. when my (already generous) free trial ended, they extended it by three more months for me + were highly responsive to emails. I did not feel like a random user; the Readwise team has repeatedly made me feel like a human. (I’ve now paid for the yearly subscription two years in a row, and I tell people how great this app is all the time.) another feature I love is having the ability to select the voice for the audio reader. I am hard of hearing with an odd kind of hearing loss. low pitched and especially high pitched voices are difficult for me to understand, so whether I can easily listen to an audiobook or podcast is dependent on the voice type. in Reader, I selected a voice that works great for me, so now I can listen to anything I can save. huge accessibility win. there are many other features I love as well. being able to search through things I’ve read all in one place is an amazing feature, among others. this is also one of the only apps where I actually appreciate the AI integration (even beyond the voice readers). ghostreader doesn’t feel forced on me, but it’s there for the occasional time I find it useful. I could go on, but I have some reading to do. I’m starting law school next year and SO glad I found this app before beginning. If this app exists for the rest of my life and the interface design + functionality stays this good, you’ve got a lifelong subscriber. I have major gratitude for the Readwise team. the ONE thing that would make this app even better for me is a Kobo (ereader) integration. if it had a Kobo integration, I’d officially call it the perfect app. I love the physical experience of reading on my Kobo rather than phone or tablet, and I wish I could save articles to Reader, read on my Kobo, and have my highlights sync up. overall, 5/5 app FOR SURE.

Great app, disastrous quality control

8.2.2 · 2026/04/21 13:05 · pendolino

3

The amount of bugs this app has is amongst the highest I've ever seen on any app, whether high quality or otherwise . It's too bad, because this thing is really, really, really good when it works. For at least a year or two now, my inbox on my iPhone just does not want to work properly. It takes forever to load, and I've cleared the cache and done everything in the instructions and troubleshooting, but nothing seems to happen. I really do hope the developers get their act together.

3

I love the idea of this app. I love the feature set. What I do t love is that a substantial portion of the articles I save get improperly saved. For example, I saved an article and the top and bottom sections (about 80% of the article) weren’t saved. I tried the same thing in GoodLinks — none. The article was as expected. Not sure what’s going on here but great features can’t make up for unreliable parsing.

If you decide to use this app, prepare to expand your ideas of what is possible with a reader app. Wildly powerful and takes some time to get comfortable with, but for serious readers it’s 100% worth it. This app has changed the way I consume almost all online, and some offline content. While it’s not perfect (yet), it is very actively developed and supported. New features are coming all the time and when things break, they’re at least quickly acknowledged and usually resolved reasonably fast as well. It’s the best app I’ve seen in this category and I’ve tried plenty!

I like it, but not seeing much progress

Been a paid subscriber for two years. I like a lot of things about the app: dark mode, flipping from one email to the next immediately from the end of an email I just finished, being able to save links inside of emails to read them later, custom email addresses to forward newsletters directly to the Reader. It solves the use case of “I want to have all my reading and highlights in one place” With that said, I’ve seen very little product progress over the last two years. The AI text to speech is still primitive. If you get a lot of emails, it’s still possible to be overwhelmed by the amount of content and feel like the app isn’t helping you get a grip on the information flow. There are a lot of missed opportunities to use AI for data analysis and better summaries. The “feed” view has a lot of unnecessary elements like the “Email” tag, an overflow menu that hides way too many important options, an AI summary that is too small and not informative enough, and a “reading time” indicator that is not accurate. Also line lengths are too long when reading on iPad. It feels like this is an app that started with a strong code idea, but lost its focus.

Love this app for read to later. I’m on my second year of a paid subscription and it’s an obvious decision when it comes time to renew. It pairs with Readwise to save Kindle highlights. The only feature that I feel like I need that today it don’t have is aggregating articles to create a Kindle Digest like Matter does (that app is inferior).

Disingenuous update re Apple Pencil

7.17 · 2025/09/01 20:21 · da-wdc

3

Yes, you can finally use an Apple Pencil to highlight. But it’s nothing like you’d expect. You can’t highlight PDFs unless you’re in “text” view. Ok, annoying, but maybe not the end of the world. Until you switch back to pdf view. Then you can’t see your highlights anymore. Forget about something basic like handwriting notes. Not available. I realize this is a reader app not a pdf app. But if you want to claim your app supports Apple Pencil then support it. I really want to like this app more but there are just SO many seemingly needless friction points. I’ve signed up for one more year in the naive belief that when they say more support for iPad is on the way that it really is. We shall see

Very helpful to collect and curate digital content

7.14 · 2025/07/09 06:56 · Pryn625

3

This app works well for collecting and managing the digital content I consume. —- 07/08/25: iPhone share to Reader issues resolved. Further enhancements I would like are [1] account merge, or [2] an export in a format that can be imported (as is) to another account. [3] Separate Tag and Notes buttons. In general, I’m most interested in having the ability to review what I have read/watched/listened to over periods of time (such as in the month or over the year); the ability to associate notes with that content for future reference; and the ability to curate a collection for different purposes - such as in identifying resources for a presentation. —- 02/07/25: iPhone share to Reader issues persist. I was using this app to collect mostly podcasts and youtube but several months ago the “share” feature stopped creating entries in my account. Did not matter what app I used (safari, pocket-cast, youtube, etc). If I want to create an entry now, I have to copy the link and paste it into reader. I have been hoping the issue would get resolved but so far no luck.

For unknown reasons, though: the iPad OS app is the web browser’s inferior in every way. The lack of a sidebar is nuts and it’s basically a high-res version of the phone app. What’s up with that?

Wow, it has everything

A place to read, listen (text to speech), and organize your notes. All very well executed with a great UX. I wish I found this years ago.

Best Centralized Reading App

After finally getting fed up with Pocket after 10+ years, I made the switch to Reader and haven't looked back. The subscription is definitely more expensive, but I've found the additional value to be worth it. I love the ability to triage and organize my read-later saves. I especially love the ability to send email newsletters to the Feed and then save interesting articles out of there directly into my read later queue.

Best Omnivore replacement

If you’re here because Omnivore is over and you need a replacement that supports reading everything in one app (articles, newsletters, RSS feeds, PDFs, ePubs), Reader is the best replacement. Although it’s not free, it’s a much more polished user experience than Omnivore. Even if Omnivore stayed around, I would want to switch to Reader.

Good App, too pricey

I enjoyed my first day using the app, but learned that it costs about $10-13 a month! I read that a year ago it was $8-9. In a perfect world I would use this app, but this cost is ludicrously high for the service offered. Subscriptions are everywhere now and I’m frankly fine with a free version that is slightly worse.

Absolutely Essential Companion App

I moved all my emails and RSS feeds into this app. Now I actually read and highlight them! A must have companion for Readwise users.

can’t upgrade

Is there anyway you can keep the tags locally so it doesn’t take so long to load my long list of tags?

Absolutely phenomenal - one small request :)

This reader app has completely changed how I read books. I am a big reader on my kindle Paperwhite Signature, or was at least. I barely pick the thing up now. Sure the screen is a little easier on the eyes but the convenience of Reader is unreal. The easy transferability of my books that are often purchased externally from Amazon from my devices is fantastic. Being able to quick search through books is also great. The highlight feature is also excellent, however it’s still a little awkward with edge characters, for example in the Daily Stoic. I use this app for coursework with textbooks, for reading articles later, and of course reading books. My one complaint is I’d love to be able to set the theme based off a separate app schedule instead of my phone. My phone is always in dark mode, but I prefer to read on the light theme during the day and have the app switch to dark mode during the night. It’s honestly a five star even without that feature but I was just hoping this might get noticed. Promise I’ll update this - I know the app is still in beta. Regardless, this app subscription would probably be the last subscription I’d ever get rid of, even after Spotify which I also use constantly. Fantastic. I’m changing my review to 5 stars because I was able to create a couple of shortcuts automations that changes my phone from dark mode to light mode depending on the time of day just for Reader.

Love it.

I use it every day. The features for space repetition and syncing with Obsidian make this app a game changer. Also reading articles to me. The app I never knew I needed.

Only 8 days into the free trial and I am in awe

I just can’t believe it all works so seamlessly. I have an ebook for which no audiobook exists, and now I can simply use AI to listen to it… and it actually doesn’t sound like a complete robot? I used to watch so many YouTube videos and get lazy about taking notes - now I can simultaneously watch a video and highlight the closed captions and it’s automatically saved for me? And even better, it’s all organized for me into a notion database?! And I now have a personalized email address so I can route my email newsletters away from cluttering my gmail inbox? This is such a massive upgrade to the disarray of email, OneNote/notion, youtube playlists, ebook highlights etc. that I don’t think I can ever go back. One simple request: if there is any way to add rules, for example to automatically add tags to certain newsletters or from specific websites, I would love replacing that manual effort.

Great app and service but performance issues

Really like using readwise reader for all my rss feeds and reading purposes but the big problem i have is performance issues with the app (on an iPhone 14 pro). The home screen and daily digest is basically unusable due to how slow it is and how much it lags while scrolling. The library and feed tabs are mostly fine, though reading articles can also lag a bit. Im not sure if this is due to how many articles i have saved or what, but ive been having these issues for several weeks now

Fantastic

The most important app on my phone and the best reading and library management app I’ve ever used. It works/syncs well on mobile/web and has many useful features, but most importantly, it isn't actively hostile to the user like Books, Kindle, Audible, Nook and every other reading app. It just lets you read the files you want.

Better (and cheaper) than Speechify

Sure, it doesn’t yet come with Snoop Dogg’s voice, and it doesn’t read Kindle books, yet. Still, in terms of functionality, design, layout, annotation capabilities, it’s miles ahead of any competitor I have come across thus far. I can’t wait to see how this app develops. In the meantime, I will be using this Readwise reader app daily. Oh, and I cancelled Speechify.
