It asks you all these questions & then freezes. After making you agree to a free trial, which doesn’t show up in your subscriptions, so you can’t cancel.

Had this app for a while and it was great. Redownloaded the app, and now when I am signing up, and setting “rules” the app instantly crashes. When is this going to be fixed? It’s been like this for a while now. I just want to use the app.

Once my free trial ended it kind of stopped working. It only blocks the apps part of the time. If I’m in the app when the blocks happen I don’t get locked out of them. The last two weeks it’s also gave me a report that I have used my phone for 0 minutes a day when honestly my phone usage hasn’t really gone down at all. I’m on it far too much. So that’s disappointing. It wasn’t super expensive but it doesn’t work at all.

Genuinely use to be a game changing app but now it’s incredibly buggy to the point where I reset my 15 min limit EIGHT TIMES in a row to access an app. Absolutely tragic and given this only happened post major update I can’t imagine it isn’t intentional. Shame on them.

The new Opal update has made the app useless. Now that we can easily change the resistance from the waiting room screen, it's so much easier to just change it back to standard and open the unblocked apps in an instant. Previously it was actually working because changing resistance also required atleast 60seconds of wait time which was enough to make us not do it
4.11 · 2026/08/23 03:30 · Bobbie2026
Ok this new update has been on for over a month and it’s still trash. So much worse than the previous version. I can’t even see what time my app expires. All it does is give a countdown that I entered. Show me the time.

This app was amazing until the recent update changed the UI. It really ruined the app for me. It isn't intuitive anymore. It is very sad because it really helped manage screen time with the previous interface. Now, why is the little unblock oval floating over the Home Screen so prominately? Why stuck in dark mode with sizes of text all over the place? Why are the buttons so small and transparent? It is all now cluttered and hard to find. Also I want to easily start sessions anytime and be able to start simultaneous other block sessions at different lengths. This is not possible now. The single session takes over the whole screen, it doesn't allow access to any other parts of opal when using the instant start blocking feature. This is so bizarre. I want to access the app to review rules, look at settings, etc. not lock the entire app during a session. It's essentially useless. Please restore what was great about opal.

I’ve used Opal in the past with no issue. For weeks now I’ve been trying to re-install opal and EVERY TIME I try to set it up it freezes and crashes on the setup page. I’m still paying for the subscription so I’m basically paying for nothing at this point. This is a serious bug please fix it. I guess I need to go elsewhere which is a shame because when the app works it really is helpful. I’ve reset and updated my phone, deleted and redownloaded the app. WEEKS I’ve had this issue I’m telling you nothing will get it working.what a shame.

Since the new update 3 months ago? this no longer works. Doesn’t track screen time properly. Doesn’t block the apps. I paid quite a bit for this and the first few months it was awesome!! I would not recommend it now. Bought a brick to use instead.

App is pretty glitchy but tbh it’s harder to open your apps when the UI doesn’t work so ig it’s a win.

My one good thing to say about this app, is that it does work. However, It’s so unbelievably hard to work my way around the app. For example, I want to take one of my apps out of the unblocking portion — and it’s not working. I tried even deleting the app, and makes me put in a screen time passcode I didn’t think existed. Long story short, can’t delete the app, and it’s making me mad. Please fix this problem.

I thought i understood how this app works, you get to basically make your own rules and it will close the apps after a certain amount of time but it literally doesnt work right. It will either close my apps and if i want to reset it (give myself 15 more minutes) it wont let me. Like the app i want will open again but then close after 2 seconds. It also doesnt work at all half the time, i have it set to where it closes tiktok and instagram after 2 hours of use and it will go way past 2 hours and not close them. I dont know ive only been using this app for a few weeks but it doesnt seem to do what its supposed to do

Great concept, but unfortunately the app has been consistently unreliable. I purchased the $99.99 annual membership, but I’ve repeatedly had to delete and reinstall the app because of ongoing glitches. It now freezes during setup when I select the apps to block and then displays a completely black screen, making the service unusable. I’ve followed the recommended troubleshooting steps without success and have contacted Opal Support to request assistance and a refund. I’ll update this review if the issue is resolved.

Opal team- There was no reason for you guys to entirely change the UI of this app. This was one of the best functioning, helpful apps that I have ever came across and am currently on a 201 day streak of using the functionalities the app provides. With the change to the UI, it is now super difficult to track the timing spent specific apps, the app blocking only works 50% of the time, the sleep score doesn’t even make sense and shouldn’t be apart of the app, the app isn’t even synced to my real local time (I will get notifications at 11pm that my normal sleep time of 9:37pm is approaching, AND the daily scores will reset at different times every day), and it’s honestly running way slower than before. Opal, please just go back to where we can see all of our apps, see how much time spent, and knock it off with all of the unnecessary add ins and extra “scoring tactics”. Again, this was my favorite app for a while due to the superb user experience and easy to use app, but has become extremely hard to see the value in continuing to use this app.

I really enjoyed the opal app when I first downloaded it. The layout made sense and it was intuitive to use. And it worked well! Since the recent updates though it has been glitchy—sometimes keeping things blocked outside of the set hours or not blocking things when they are supposed to be blocked. And the new layout is confusing and difficult to navigate. I still can’t figure out how to get to vacation mode. I wish they would go back to the old layout.

I was finding Opal very helpful in managing my screen-time but the new update is awful. The interface is terrible and I am no longer able to remove certain apps to be included in my total screen time for a more accurate representation of my unwanted phone usage. I tried to get acclimated to the new update but have finally decided to delete it and try a different app now.

I am giving Opal a one star review so that this problem is fixed ASAP. Although Opal is very useful and has allowed me to cut my screen time, my main issue is that there used to be a feature that allowed you to end a session when unblocking an app. This feature was extremely useful because it allowed you to end a session for all blocked apps or only a selected app so that if you really needed to use an app for the day you didn’t have to keep unblocking it. Unfortunately, with the update made around two months ago that feature seems to have been removed. I am stuck at 15 minutes of unblocked time for each unblock and it is extremely frustrating to have to go back into Opal and unblock every 15 minutes on days when I really need extended time. I urge the developers to re-add that feature. It was a very convenient and practical feature for people who needed extended time on certain apps. Thank you very much for understanding:)

It’s easy to override by simply deleting the app, but if you’re using it properly within the app time limits don’t always work, hard mode can be overridden depending on whether the app is working or not. These things are not user error but in app errors making the app mostly useless. It’s too expensive for this number of mistakes. It’s better to focus on healthy habits around smart phone use than pay for this app. I’m shocked at the positive reviews. From the negative reviews I’m seeing the app may have worked at some point. At this point I think it would be worth refunding people’s money, because they are basically ripping people off for a faulty app. I’ve had this app for a while now and. No idea when the UI was good, but it’s pretty difficult to find certain rules. Anyways definitely feeling like I’m getting ripped off and it’s not a great feeling.

I loved the app until it updated. Now it’s buggy and has less options. It does cost but was worth it the first year I had it. Then, there was an update and now the app has much less options and doesn’t work half the time. For example, when it should be blocking an app, I often find it not blocked despite Opal saying it is. Then, more frustrating, when an app isn’t supposed to be blocked it sometimes is and then I can’t unblock it on the app.
4.9 · 2026/08/11 03:26 · Anonymous_Scholar
The app has good intent; however, the new update really messed things up as it is way easier to stop a blocker and pause a rule. Before the update, it took like 120s in order to edit or stop the rule. Now it is way more tempting

4.9 · 2026/08/10 00:45 · Liebmann Family
If you have kids that you monitor this adds your time to theirs. Their AI chatbot “fix” didn’t fix the issue and it takes 4 days for an actual person. There was no warning when you go over your time, no notifications when your designated focus times start and stop (yes my notifications abd tracking where on). All in all entirely useless. Canceled the trial and will look elsewhere.
4.9 · 2026/08/09 19:19 · borovsky.d
1. Blocks don’t activate from time to time, even though that’s the main function of the app. 2. You just can’t use the Opal app without all these gamification pop-ups screaming at you. That’s especially silly for a “focus company.”

Idk if it’s the move towards Liquid Glass, but the latest UI update sucks. Just deleted with a 516 day streak. Tired of my phone being a brick when I need it even for things not blocked by the app, like music. I liked it before because it was light weight. Stop reinventing the wheel
4.8 · 2026/08/07 05:20 · LittlePanda08
I’ve been using Opal for around 3 years, and upon download, it was great and very helpful. However in the last 6 months the app was received an update that redesigned the apps layout and made it quite irritating. First off, they removed the screen time usage on the front page which was very helpful as whenever I wanted to use a restricted app I would be forced to see my screen time, which helped me be more conscious about it. (I understand that this is personal preference but the new “score” system is vague and makes little sense to the common user). Most importantly though the app is EXTREMELY laggy. It seems that with the new update, it became extremely unoptimized and taxing on my phone for what should be a lightweight app. I’m disappointed in the changes made and I hope that these issues, mainly the lag, will be fixed.

This app used to be perfect. A month or two ago though (after their “big” update) they ruined it. Since then, my blocks will turn on and off randomly and others won’t even activate unless I open the app to reload them. After having been a premium subscriber for years… I’ve finally made the decision to switch to something else. The cost was well worth it to me before…but now? The app is totally worthless. Don’t spend your money. Get something else.

I’ve used this app on and off for quite a while. The new look is cool i guess but now it tuns super slow. It’ll say wait 3s and 10s it’s still waiting. Scrolling is slow. It sucks when i’m trying to get to a blocked app/site and i need to get to it but the app freezes. Idk whats up with that.
4.8 · 2026/08/06 15:22 · Lydster1001
I previously recommended this app to many of my friends but after the new revamp I would rescind that recommendation. The new UI is terrible and features have been taken away. I feel like i’m being punished for being a free user. I understand supporting the app and creators but subscribing to not be on your phone is a wild concept to me. Limiting how many apps you can block is crazy. You need to pay in order to block more than 6 apps. The previous UI was more accessible and user friendly. Reconsider your future changes please. Update: still unusable. Driving me crazy, might delete soon if not fixed.

4.8 · 2026/08/06 13:06 · Bdjfurnnr
Still buggy. Limits are inconsistent and sometimes won’t block apps when the timers run out, leading to excessive screen time. Also sometimes it will mess up the number of unblocks left, either giving you too many or too little. In my last review I pointed out other bugs and they said it was all fixed, but clearly not. If they don’t fix it soon I’ll have to switch to a different app that works (there’s plenty of others right?)
4.8 · 2026/08/06 11:27 · Brookrene
I used to love this app so much. With the recent update I wanted to give it a try again (because it was buggy before). I’ve always had issues with their time limits so to circumvent the issue, I do a separate rule for each app I want to limit (it’s only two, so not a big deal). With the new update, Opal is now constantly giving me a halfway there notification even when I’m not in the app with the limit. As soon as I click on the notification or swipe it to get it off the screen, it notifies me all over again! But it’s always only the halfway marker time. I could have just five minutes left and it tells me I have half the time. I went over yesterday (Opal didn’t kick me out of the app like it should have) and still at the end of the day it told me I had half the time left. My blocking rules have been a little glitchy since the update too. Not as bad as the time limits though. I used to use the paid version and I actually want to be able to pay for some of the advanced features, but I won’t because I can’t get the most basic things to work correctly.

I’m bummed to write this. I love Opal and have been using it for almost a year. The newest update came out of nowhere and honestly sucks. The functionality is weird and the app itself is GLITCHY. I’m this close 🤏🏾 to deleting the app entirely because of how frustrated it’s made me. Sometimes I need to bypass the blocking features to access an app (i.e., for work) and it works maybe 50% of the time. Sure, it’s keeping me off my apps but bypassing that is so glitchy now. I never had issues with the older version of the app.

This app was one of my favorites and I had planned to pay for the premium version once school started again. Unfortunately a recent update made it nearly unusable. It would either cancel the rules that I had which would result in me having more screen time than planned or it would restart the rule I had just paused every 30 seconds, locking me out of my apps when I didn’t want it to. I went from recommending the app to everyone to deleting the app in just over a month and the last month was painful. Hoping to find a better alternative.

This used to help a lot, it did its purpose and that’s what I liked about it. A few months ago it started to get really buggy and laggy, I would get on my phone for the first time in the day and it would block all my apps saying I reached my time limit, when I went to undo this, resetting blocks didn’t work, so I had to get more time and that was always really laggy. It would also block my apps when I still had an hour before it should’ve blocked it, and honestly if an app that’s only designed to do this and it fails that’s just stupid. This would happen every single time and it’s very annoying. The new update also ruined a lot of things, I can’t see me actuall screen time anymore, can’t manage blocks easily, it’s just terrible. I bet this is on purpose cause you want people to pay for premium to unlock the best experience. Honestly if you really wanna manage your screen time just use apple screen time and use some discipline

Borderline ready to quit this app. It is super laggy, unlock timers are inaccurate and boot me off after 5 mins even if I’ve selected 15. The new strip essentially makes it too easy to unlock, doesn’t increase the wait time after every lock and lets me skip the puzzles to unlock and it’s too complicated to figure how to re-setup everything. Too busy, too laggy, too complicated, it’s a mess guys sorry!

I’ve been using this app nonstop for over a year now. It’s been amazing and a great help in controlling my scrolling on social media. Lately though the app has gotten a lot harder to navigate. With each new update I need to completely relearn how to use the app as the actual point of the app, for screen time control, gets buried deeper and deeper in all the extra features they keep adding. The app was great to begin with. Please stop going crazy with all the new updates and features because it’s getting harder to navigate around and access the actual app blocking menu which was the whole point of the app to begin with. Now all the settings have been changed and the app has become useless and unusable. I’m very sad but I have to drop the app after using it for over a year. Update: I am now deleting the app and switching to Jomo. The app has stopped working like it is supposed to. The timeouts sometimes work and sometimes don’t. And sometimes even if I have blocks on, all the apps are still able to be used and reloading blocked apps doesn’t fix anything. The app isn’t serving its intended purpose. So sad, but it was good while it lasted.

Got this app and it did help at first. Reduced my screen time by 2 hours a day and had a long streak. Then the app got an update and removed my favorite part of the app. The screen time limit for all apps overall instead of individual apps. Now the app is basically useless, lags a lot, and doesn’t really help me much anymore. Please bring back the overall screen time limiter.

The update was atrocious. It move the functionality around and broke a bunch of things (eg can’t put categories in the list of distracting apps so every game downloaded has to be added manually). It then logged me out, declared i don’t have premium anymore because of that, disabled feature and then added a bunch of random weekend blocks to my block list without informing me. The good news is it is now correct that i don’t have premium as i unsubscribed.

It took some discipline to get used to, but it has really given me a lot of mental clarity. I didn’t realize how addicted I was to some apps and it was good to get control of my life.

I am very disappointed to have to write this, but the latest big update revamped everything. But this revamp wasn’t even good, it ruined everything for me. Not only did it stop having hourly check ins, but I can’t have multiple apps unblocked that are crucial to my daily life. I need communication, fitness, studying, and mapping as unblocked but it stops at 9 apps total. On top of all of that, the unblock feature became broken and it doesn’t even have me wind down before using an app. The app feels like its become super limited and intended for purchases now. Updates have ruined it for me.
