Great functionality, great darkness. However, this continually causes my safari browser to crash on my iPhone making my browser completely useless. The only solution to this was disabling dark reader. I would not recommend buying.

Randomly activates a weird non-dynamic mode, even when the site is set to off, or even extension to off sometimes. Please Fix!

I used to really like dark reader but sadly it doesn’t work on Safari any longer. Chrome still supported but the Safari one can no longer differentiate between any of the webpages. Simply thinks every site is “Google”. I’ve contacted the Dark Reader support team and they do not respond so I assume they are no longer supporting this plugin.

The browser slows down so significantly to the point where typing was lagging for 1~2 whole seconds. Suspicious to say the least.

One you have to pay for the app. Two you have to allow the pos to track all your websites. Why am I paying for something that’s mining my data? If you don’t allow it to, you can’t use it. DONT GET IT UNLESS YOU WANT TO LET THEM MINE AND SELL YOUR DATA!

Im sure its the fact that its a 3rd party extension but if its not going to always work maybe just stop saying its compatible. its making it a horrendous tedious job just trying to find what the hell im clicking. God forbid you hit the wrong link. Sorry im going overboard but come on mannnnnnn

It’s super laggy on Google Sheets, on chrome it’s not but on safari it is, please fix

This app does not do what it says.

Didn’t work on the one site I bought it for. Worse, it broke Safari by hiding the refresh button entirely—no joke. I had to uninstall the extension just to get my toolbar working again. Absolutely not worth the $5.

Crippled my MacOS Safari browser performance… removed extension & performance is now lightening fast again.

While it does change page elements to a darker font, there are problems. Causes numerous pages to incompletely load. I ended up going with a different app which works flawlessly.

Some sites that use charts don't render properly with typical darkmodes that are built into browsers. Dark reader works for this on the desktop and other mobile platforms but it simply is not equivalent for the ios/safari implementation. Didn't work out.

Dark mode is good but flashing isn’t acceptable

Pages flash white before the extension kicks in and turns the page to dark mode, defeating the entire purpose of the extension. They blame safari, but competitors have solved this issue.

I’ve been getting an increasing number of errors on webpages and tried disabling this dark extension boi and it completely fixed the problem. I switched to a different dark mode extension.

Comparing to its PC Browser version (i.e. Windows Edge, Firefox, Chrome etc.), this Dark Reader has many drawbacks. When I ask Doubao AI (web) to demonstrate some C++ code, this Dark Reader turns the codes as well as the codebar into dark colour alike and I cannot claerly see the codes, while such problem has never appeared with the PC version. Why your PC version is free and iOS is paid, while iOS lacks so many functionality (like contrast settings and so on) comparing to PC, and even with so many compatibility issues and BUGS!! It is strikingly hard to believe, that such a FAMOUS software, with THREE-year-history on the App Store, could have done a poor work in development and maintenance, and turns out to be an INFAMOUS software!! 脸都不要了！

Does not work as intended. I attempted to request a refund but apparently this app is not eligible for refunds. Buyer beware DO NOT BUY. This app will mess up the way things are viewed and you will not be able to see half of your sites.

Dark Reader has been showing settings for the wrong page (it thinks I’m on a different tab) and not responding when I click its settings. I reached out to the developer 4 weeks ago with no response, sent a second email and still no response. It looks like this app has unfortunately been abandoned by the developer. I will update this review if I get a response from them.

Paid the 5$ but it didnt load any websites after enabling.... Iphone 15, i cant use the app because it breaks the websites

Broken on macOS with GitHub, all pages appears dimmed regardless of extension settings. It fixed after page reload but it’s too annoying to reload pages over and over again

Need serious optimization especially for the dock app mode of Safari. It causes great lag in typing and severe battery consumption. Tested on Overleaf.com. Everything is back to normal when this extension is turned off.

The constant bright white flashing between web pages is a deal killer for this app. Other similar extensions get the job done without this issue, such as Dark and Darker.

There are over 1k requests on Github and one of them is that this extension breaks the Kindle Cloud Reader. That complaint was from 2020 and zero response. I think this is abandonware.

Not working anymore

Not working on Safari anymore, very inconsistent.

No longer works on most pages with iOS 17.4.

Extension has been good to me for a long time but it’s been getting more and more buggy so it was time to switch. Esp since the updates haven’t been as timely as I’d like to squash those bugs. Won’t advertise what I switched to (sorry for anyone out there wondering), but look up safari dark mode and you’ll find plenty of good options. I will say I paid a few bucks for the new one I picked, and it’s been worth it.

Don’t waste your money, hasn’t worked for a few weeks now.

This app has been broken since iOS 17.4 came out. A good developer would make their app compatible AHEAD of such a major release. A decent developer would at least fix their app within days or maybe 1-2 weeks of such a major release. This app has not been updated for months. It no longer works. Don’t waste your time.

Not sure what changed in iOS 17.4 but the extension no longer changes the website’s color to dark. It is always default even with the Dark Reader turned on.

Paid but didn't receive new features and updates that other browser versions offer for free.

actually makes web experience worse. instead of keeping a low brightness and using light mode, now I have dark mode with a high brightness and get flashbanged every time i open a new web page...

it will not activate. no matter what it will not activate at all. cant find any help with this. looks good tho in the pictures ...

not working/ no responding after clicking ''active for safari'' (macOS catalina)

Won’t work. Just makes the borders dark and words unreadable. Background is still white. Money back please?

Not since the big update

Slows the website load a lot, loads as expected with out the extension. It’s very frustrating.

Doesn't show up in Safari Preferences, even after restart.

After I updated it to 2.0.0, the extension has been glitched. Images will get turned to black blocks and the extension menu doesn't appear when I clicked the icon.

This version is really behind the chrome version. I'm having a hard time understanding, was this version abandoned even though it's the only paid version of Dark Reader?

The extension crashes very often, rendering pages unreadable. When you click the extension icon there is no response. This is a problem because it requires closing and reopening my browser in the middle of the day, which derails my work at the worst times. The issue has been reported for years on Github but has gone stale as the developers don't seem interested in debugging or fixing it. The extension doesn't work reliably, but has not been updated in a year. I hesitated to leave this review, but my frustration has won. Unlike Dark Reader's other releases, this is paid software and it is fair for users to expect support.

These guys are sponsored by PayPal/Honey. It says so on their website. PayPal/Honey is the #1 spyware extension out there, harvesting your data and selling it to data exchanges. If they sponsored this app, then they must be getting something in return (i.e. data). Do not use this app until they drop their PayPal/Honey sponsors. The website promises it doesn't sell your data, but always follow the money man!

I will change my review to 5 stars if this extension gets updated. I paid money and this extension is way worse than the google chrome dark reader extension.

Safari windows blacked out along with the mail app. Not reliable.

It displays the original web page, bright and sharp, for half a second then converts it to the dark mode. It makes it even harder and worse for my eyes to adjust to the light switch in such a short time.

Worked super well for a while but hasn't recieved any updates, at all, since I've purchased the app. Safari constantly has issues rendering pages with this extension enabled. Unfortunately, I have uninstalled it on all my devices because of the issues caused by the extension.

This extension works THE BEST on every other browser EXCEPT for Safari, literally I cant even count how many times it has given me a headache just because it either breaks the Site, or Brightens the page instead of darkening or The filter mode as to be manually toggled, but Wait !! its not like this version simply had a persite config option that would spare atleast some of my brain cells from this torture.

macos safari version is pretty basic comparing to DarkReader for Chrome and even the new Dark Reader for IOS. It does not synchronize settings with IOS or with other mac devices, it has limited options. Given it's not free, I can't give it more than 2 stars despite I Love DarkReader for Chrome and for IOS

It's miles away from the free version on other browsers

I get terrible migraines and thought this would help my light sensitivity. It blocks out the text from the home page on websites!! Can I get a refund please??

the latest update introduces an exaggerated delay and is basically unusable.

This extension requires way too much access: ability to read all data on all websites! IMMEDIATELY UNINSTALLED. Not worth the risk of exposing my logins and private data. We should be able to choose only the specific sites to activate it. Completely useless to me despite purchasing it.

Now when I click on Dark Reader icon on safari menu bar, the menu doesn't show anymore.

The problem is probably that my Macbook is old and still running Catalina, but the extension isn't doing anything.

On the reddit site, the main background will go dark and the text will change to white text but the background of the text box says white, so I'm looking at white text on a white background. On the arch linux site, Dark Reader doesn't work at all. I use these sites all the time, making this a waste of my money.

the developer says he does not collect user data, BUT apple cannot verify it and the app has access ALL data via your browser, from id/pwd, SSN, CC.

Many websites like Apple.com do not loaded when dark mode turned on.

Noir was what I started using with Safari on iOS but there are websites it doesn’t work on. Since Firefox with Dark Reader is my primary configuration on desktop computers, it made sense to try their iOS app. I found that most of the websites that don’t work in Noir work in Dark Reader, and most of the sites that don’t work in Dark Reader work in Noir, so instead of switching I now have Dark Reader turned on by default and Noir turned off by default, and when I encounter a website that doesn’t darken, I switch by making an exception for it in both extensions. Ideally one would be able to handle every website but nothing is ever that simple. Very few websites slip through both, so I’m pretty content with the setup.

This software was well worth the price. I have not had any problems with this software working with the Safari Browser. There are many setting if you want to adjust the Dark Mode. I love the default setting: “Detect Dark Theme. Site’s Theme Will Not Be Overridden.” This setting can be changed also. I Highly Recommend Dark Reader for Safari.

This extension has saved me a lot of eye strain over the years, I donated money to them when using it on other platforms and I’m proud to support them here as well. People complaining about 5 bucks? Are you kidding me? I rather pay that amount instead of a consult to an eye doctor, that’s for sure. So please, support these guys as this is hands down the best dark mode extension on the whole internet, a lot of time and effort was put into it and again 5 bucks ain’t going to bankrupt your account.

I've used Dark Reader for years on Firefox, and it's a very reliable extension. Very rarely do find websites where the color pallet swaps make it unreadable. And when it does, I can just turn off the extension for a second, get what i need, and flip it back on. Though I haven't spent very long on the Safari version, I believe that will carry over to this version as well. (I will update my review if it turns out otherwise.) Worth the money and the peace of mind for my privacy.

That’s honestly the best way to describe this app. It does exactly what it promises, which is the only reason I paid for it. I’m tired of hunting for dark mode on every website when my computer is already set to it. I love that the sites I visit are automatically in dark mode. Bright white backgrounds absolutely wreck my eyes, and this app completely fixes that problem. To whoever made this: thank you. Truly.

I originally got Dark Reader on my computer and I love the functionality. Rarely a website is designed such that I can’t see everything properly in dark mode and it’s so easy to switch modes for that website only, and it has saved me so much eye strain and headache! I was so excited when I saw they have an app for Safari too, instant download. I recommend it to everyone!

Cannot set time for dark and normal mode

An ability to toggle or disable Dark Reader for PDFs on iOS would be awesome.

This is a game-changer for people who prefer Dark Mode!!!

I have been a long time user of this app and I have found it essential for late night reading/browsing before bed or when I have insomnia. Even on the lowest iPhone brightness settings, websites with white or light backgrounds can be completely unbearable. It would be a sad day if web standards change enough to not make this app work anymore.

The latest update freezes certain websites, specifically the Google webistes. Please fix soon. Thank you! :)

This is working well again for me with the recent update, no more white flashing that I’ve noticed yet when loading sites.

After updating to version 2.1.2, when my system is in dark mode, the extension blacks out the YouTube tab that is currently playing. This happens even though I have it set to 'Disabled for the current website,' and my other YouTube tabs work fine.

Thank you for the update, seems to have fixed my issue. Been using this for years and back at it.

Used to lag, doesn’t anymore.

I’m awaiting cataract surgery and have barely been able to do anything on my phone 😭 because so few websites work natively with dark / reader mode. Specifically I was searching for some way to make Genius compatible (LGSTO!) and found a thread suggesting this app. I paid the $5 with my fingers crossed and almost cried when I saw it actually worked. This is going to make the next month or two so much bearable for me - I can't thank the creators enough!

Superb, love the multiple mode view. With an Apple Display my eyes ae saved! Love! Get it 100%!!

Makes up for the operating system dark mode shortcomings so well! Wikipedia in dark mode years before they actually had it in their lab or main website… Any website that doesn't support dark mode, now you have it! It also does a pretty decent job at converting the color palette as well so that other bright colors are muted not just black-and-white!

I was exposed to this app on Firefox and gladly paid for it on Safari. Protects the eyes allowing for better iPhone/iPad/Mac at night. Would never go without it.

I have been a major fan of Dark Reader extension for years with all my Windows Linux Browsers. I am trying to switch to a Mac and found I was required to purchase it for Safari, was going to try purchase a different extension for cheaper price, but before I did purchase that extension I learned I was also going to have to purchase a second one for iOS and iPadOS, but with Dark Reader I could purchase it once and it carried to all my other Apple devices. That alone made the decision for me. $4.99 one time or $2.99 for each platform…. That means they charged me $6 for something I could get for $5.00. I highly recommend this extension, sometimes it may screw-up, but so does it with those other extensions, at least this gets updated regularly.
