Subscription is not good

Just wants u to buy books and buy credits via a subscription for monthly use. $24 lifetime plan =0 use without buying more. I was excited about this app but all about monthly subscriptions

The keyboard is horrendously terrible. The dictation often acts like it’s recording and then captures nothing with no error. There is no chunked recording if connection is lost part way through. You can’t dictate something you copied and want to paste without creating new documents into your library each time. Terrible UI. It’s good when it works but it seems it only works 50% of the time on my iPhone 17 pro max. Ridiculous.

I wanna point the camera and have it read what it sees. How hard can that be? but it wants to invade all the information on my phone and send it out? I was scared when I saw what was coming from my phone to my main router

The advertisement I saw lead me to believe that I create an ai voice to read texts. When I first got the app, this feature was broken and I could not create a new voice. But now, it is not even an option. So if you see false advertising claiming that you can use Speechify to create an ai voice, save your time and money and do not buy! As a simple tool for converting text to speech it no doubt serves as well as any other app, I would avoid them purely because of their deceptive business practices.

The app keeps kicking me out every time I try to hit play on the document. The device is an iPhone 17 with the latest iOS

Cannot actually create verbatim audio files. It does some BS podcast thing that takes out all of the information you actually need.

Does this app have the ai voices? Yes, but you have to pay for all of them except like 7 which are basically the text-to-speech on your phone. No, I’m not paying $60 to use your ai slop when I could find something else that does it for free with the same expected quality.

First of all, I didn’t want the app to begin with my child downloaded a free trial and now I’m stuck with it. After requesting Apple twice to refund my $139 they refuse. So I am stuck with it.. You have to have a file or download of whatever item you want it to read. It will not read a physical book that you’ve already purchased. This app seems totally unnecessary. You can upload files to ChatGPT and chat will read it to you. I don’t understand why anybody needs this . Waste of $$$$$$$$.

I was on the free trial and I always cancel my auto-subscription in case. A few days after my free trial ended, they emailed me a bunch of follow-up marketing AND ATTEMPTED TO CHARGE MY CARD $139 purchase. If my bank had not proactively decline the suspicious transaction, I would be fighting for my money back. Super sketchy experience:/ **Update: Speechify keeps trying to charge me $140. 3x now. Luckily my bank keeps flagging the unauthorized charges. In regards to the app itself, I was not impressed since my documents HAD TO be uploaded INTO the app. As a college student, was looking for a program to read aloud across various browsers/pages.

Been using this app for years - they removed my cloned voice - no explanation- no way to recover - moving to another tool- as for customers service it's non response

They removed custom voices for premium paid users. Out of greed it’s only in the commercial version of speechify now. A slap in the face to long time paid users. Now all you have is their generic voices. No point in using this app when you can do that for free on an iPhone or iPad.

I got a 1 year subscription but ended up using it only a few times because the features are limited with reading webpages (books) that require a login. Doesn’t do well as a web extension on the iPad, it only reads in the robotic voice and tells me to I have to upgrade even though I’m logged in with a subscription. I’ve waited a year hoping for updates but alas, in 2 months this app expires and I’ve wasted $139. Also doesn’t read christian literature well, or Biblical words and references. I thought it would be the most useful app and would change my life but it didn’t work out for me.

They make the free version extremely bad and uncontrollable.

I tried it and am going down a rabbit hole to cancel the subscription. They make it impossible.

I tried this app a couple of years ago it didn’t work then and it doesn’t work now. I subscribe to the premium function, which did not allow me to use any of the premium features no matter what I tried. The webpage I was having it read to me would freeze constantly, and I’d have to completely close and reopen the page to unfreeze it. After updates, uninstalling the app and reinstalling it logging out and logging in the result was even worse. The app kept prompting me to buy the premium feature which I had already purchased to make it worse the app developers no help and I had to call Apple for them to refund my money and cancel my “premium” subscription.

I wanted to try out Speechify to make my long commutes more productive by listening to readings for class. Seems like a cool app and resource! But… it’s inaccessible. The only two options for a subscription are yearly ($139-$199) and, as a grad student, I don’t need a yearly subscription—I’d only use the app for a few months. The robotic American voice allowed via the Basic Plan is frustrating to listen to, and surely for people who read with a disability. So much for access and ease.

When I tested the app it appeared to work ok. I canceled the same day I downloaded and still got charge for a full year subscription.

While Speechify is initially a great product they charge you an upfront fee of $29/month, then you’re like I’ll save money and pay the $139.99/year. Then find out after a week of usage that you ran out of words and have to pay more money to use their product. It’s dumb, avoid this product if your using for serious studying, if you want it as a gimmick it’s pretty cool.

This app gives you a free trail but starts an auto subscription a few days later. Seems like this it an away to catch you into paying for something you won’t use.

Offered a trial period and selected “Notify before beginning membership” got no notification and charged $160 Not worth the money. Don’t use it.

They will ask you to sign up for a free trial, even when you think you’ve canceled any type of subscription they will still charge you without any warning. I was just charged $140 out of nowhere.

The app has a lot of promise for sure but without paying you are only able to use one voice which is choppy, had a confusing cadence and is hard to understand. Reading with a disability is hard enough but I don’t want to pay to read the way everyone else does.

I’d like to try the app before I invest $150. Three day trial then I get hit for full price? I may not remember to evaluate all aspects before the trap springs. I have a life. I have other things to do than focus on evaluating all corners of the app before making a significant purchase. I hope I’m wrong and I can choose a basic, non-robotic voice even on free version.

I did not want this and did not mean to buy it.

Just give me the TTS. This is not a review on functionality but my real frustration.

Being forced through the setup, I wonder if they lose 40% of potential customers or 50%?

It was stupid I was use it and it didn’t work so I know it wasn’t my phone because my freaking phone is brand new

PDFs uploaded from another device will not play on my phone. Over multiple days of slow back and forth, customer service kept offering different solutions, and each one got me to do the work of restarting my phone, deleting and re downloading, clearing the cache on Chrome (what the hell? I don’t even use chrome), etc, when their app is clearly buggy. The developers keep adding new features, but the underlying code that drives the app has remained buggy for a long time. This is a case of a failure to deliver a paid premium service and customer service will not commit to a future fix nor offer any compensation. They clearly don’t care. Don’t waste your money on this app.

Advertised as free but only free option is the most robotic voice I’ve ever heard. Screen reader that’s already on your phone for free works better than this nonsense. The default voice is intentionally bad to get to to pay $170 for a year. Disgusting scam

I used to love this app but now 90% of the time I have to upload the book I wanna read multiple times cause it keeps being deleted

You don’t find out until you get all the way into actually creating an account that they charge you an arm and a leg

Overall, it’s a good app, but the purposely lock every single voice beside the most annoying ones to force you to pay after you buy the lifetime membership, which is completely unfair in my opinion

So yes this would be great if you are active a lot or doing stuff like that a lot but to be honest close to $250 a year is insane when you can go on Spotify and search a book and be able to read it and it’s so expensive it takes you through it like it’s gonna be free and it’s just not worth it

The app no longer reads when I start a book on Sppeechify and move over to read and highlight on the Kindle app. This was possible before this update. The update made the app unusable for me.

Don’t run me through all that nonsense setup only to get to the end and tell me it’s $100+ a year. FOJ

After all the hype about reading a book to you, it couldn’t even take a picture of the book I own and read it to me!

Garbage app

I’m not having a great time with this app although I can get to scan pages there are no Twilight sage and I’m reading breaking dawn but I struggle with reading in my head and to me its awkward to read out loud. Also the thing is that I’m like in middle school and asking someone to read to me is baby-ish. I like it when my phone can read out. PLEASE!

Speechify is scammy and makes the app nearly impossible to navigate. The app offers you a discount for referrals but then makes it impossible to use the code within the app. They only offer one subscription plan (a year for $139.99) and don’t let you choose your payment method. Don’t promise a discount and refuse to actually provide it. I will be taking my business elsewhere.

Just another survey that you have to fill out to use the app just for it to give you a basic robot voice unless you pay over 50 dollars. Genuinely waste of my time

It just constantly asked me for more money. You have to pay monthly for credits and for access and unless Max, you seem to run out of credits. No thank you. I think I can build something with less features but more attuned to my needs.

Difficult to unsubscribe from premium

I love this, but have recently learned that they have proprietary over anything that you put into the system, so they can steal your work. Until this issue is resolved, it’s dangerous for academics or creatives.

I think they released this app before it was ready for production. Celebrity voices are a gimmick. I just cancelled after listening to John Rhy-Davies speak jibberish as I am trying preparing for my masters degree capstone project. When it works, it helps me focus as I read along. More often than not, it either can't process the document at all or fails horribly, I am incredibly frustrated.

I have a brand new iPhone. Memory is still empty, and this app is ridiculously slow

The ads make it look intuitive but it’s not.

you have to take a picture each page and I thought you could just take a picture of the book and it analyze what book it was and made it for you and it was many times where I'd forget to save it and I'd have to take pictures of the book all over again

Signing up for a free trail that says it’s 3 days is totally false. Expect to be charged the yearly subscription cost of $153. Apparently you have to cancel two days prior. Regardless this app is overpriced and overrated, highlighting text and pressing speak does the exact same thing and it’s free

The potential is there. The app forces you to spend 8 mins signing up and customizing your experience and then prohibits you from using any of your customizations until you pay. There’s only one free voice and it’s terrible.

Speechify reads all tables and figures, which is distracting at times because if there is a table/figure on the page and it has not finished the sentence (because it is on the opposite page) it will read the table/figure before completing the sentence and will then start in the middle of the sentence after reading the table/figure. I purchased Speechify because after I researched other text-to-speech apps, Speechify was supposed to be the best for students who would like for it to read textbooks.

Cannot recommend this app to other Apple users. I was never given my seven day trial. The commercial ads that are all over the place for this app are very misleading. They show people in library or bookstore settings scanning what looks to be the ISBN code and downloading the book without paying for it. So it looks like your membership is enough to get you some books. But it’s not. I canceled the membership and under a half an hour of subscribing and they tell me they will not refund my money that I have a whole year membership with the site. My purchase was made through their website because that’s where the offer came from not the app. But this is a warning to all other Apple users.

i bought a one year subscription for over $100 dollars and it said i ran out of credits to ask the ai questions??? how am i gonna pay over $100 and it still wants more money…. JUST GREEDY

I got this to listen to my Amazon books that are not available on audible. I have to delete and reinstall the app every time I exit. The tab required to read Amazon books disappears every single time I open without redownloading. The actual reading of the book is so annoying, it’s mechanical, robotic and completely unusable.

Don’t do this. I cancelled in July and they’re trying to charge me now. No number to call, no way to get in touch with them. Avoid these scammers 🤬

Only works well if you have a PDF. If you want to use for kindle you have to keep the app open the whole time which will kill your battery and even then it will pause or jump to the wrong page constantly. Don’t waste your money.

Otherwise you will get the ugliest voice

Worst app ever trying to charge me 139 after I cancelled

This app is absolutely horrible. It will skip words and repeat the previous sentence instead of reading the new sentence. The customer service reps tell me to log off and log back in. Then they say to delete the app and redownload it every time this happens but it continues to malfunction. It is definitely not worth the price. I used this app back in 2023 and 2024 and never had any issues. The 2026 version is horrendous! I do not recommend it!

Literally 5 minutes of unskipable irrelevant data mining set up questions before it shows me a log in page. Then, after signing in it doesn't transfer any settings over. Now it won't let me skip to the halfway point of a pdf, and before I can figure out how to do that it asks for review.

Extremely good but you gotta pay for damn near everything but the organization is amazing tho so that’s a plus

I unsubscribed and tried this for a month and then unsubscribed and kept the year of no use and was again charged for an additional year. I have received no refund after finding out and canceling again after 1 hour of seeing an email about my renewed subscription. I have asked for a refund and did not receive one. This companies practices are by far predatory and it would do you good to just read the article instead of becoming lazier and letting this app suck up GPU’s at a data center. Do not download or use.

I was very excited about this app so I scanned 91 pages of reading I had to do for homework. I had a long drive to proceed and I wanted to listen to the Pages as I drove. I was so eager to try it out that I started listening to the 90+ pages before I left and when I went back to the app when I got to my car, the pages were gone. The app does not save what you scan automatically which left me in a really awful position. They failed to tell you in their lengthy intro is that you need to save. You scan to your library. The step I never got the opportunity to try to figure out. Instead, I’m on a long drive without my Homework. But the very least I would’ve thought that after I scan the pages, it would’ve given me the option to save them, but it didn’t and it didn’t have any indication that they would all be gone if I stepped away. Therefore, I do not recommend this app because it should be a given that any scan that includes 90+ images should automatically be saved or at the very least, give you the option when you scan something.

Worst experience of my life , took forever with an unstoppable tutorial followed by a paywall, and doesn’t just work right out of the box thank god I didn’t need tts for an emergency because I got roped into a long and useless narrator app Not even a good one the voices are wack the product is wack

All the powerful books I wanted to read this app didn’t give me the option to read. This app is good for people who have the books saved already on their phones and can upload them to the app

Why is the tutorial so long? And can't be skipped

This app is very useful in concept, however it is super misleading in making you think you have unlimited voices, but you only have one option they stick you with after the agonizingly long log-in that sucks. I understand limiting options and keeping fancier voices behind a paywall, but I was under the impression that I’d be able to pick my poison. Samantha SUCKS.

This app is extremely annoying. I’m sure for specific people it has its uses. I could not stand.

I don’t understand. Did the app get updated recently, causing it to automatically skip certain words or characters when reading Chinese? I can understand if they’re strictly prohibited words, but why would it skip words or characters like “声” (sound), “笑” (laugh/smile), or “过” (pass), and so on?

Super low quality, constant skips, especially on Bluetooth in the car not to mention you get more ads than a Temu web search

If you forget to go into the app and cancel your renewed subscription after the 3 day free trial ends, then the app automatically charges you $139 for a year subscription. I could have eaten the monthly cost and even used the app a bit more before canceling, but automatically charging a year is frustrating. This is a great product but with a weirdly greedy automatic subscription system.
